Description
Clos des Papes is one of the benchmark estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, long admired for its classic style, depth, and remarkable ageing ability. This 2000 Magnum showcases the estate’s traditional approach and the pedigree that has made it a reference point for the appellation for generations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a mature Rhône red with a deep garnet core and the softened rim that comes with age. The nose typically opens with layers of ripe dark fruit, dried herbs, garrigue, leather, spice, and earthy, savoury notes, all framed by the grandeur of old-vine Grenache.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and generous, yet shaped by the finesse and balance that define Clos des Papes. Expect concentrated berry fruit, sweet spice, Provençal herbs, and a long, refined finish with enough structure to continue evolving gracefully in magnum format for years to come.
Production
The grapes come from carefully selected parcels in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the diverse terroir of galets roulés, clay, sand, and limestone gives the wine both power and elegance. Yields are kept very low, around 12–15 hl/ha, and harvesting is done with a focus on preserving fruit quality and precision. Vinification remains highly traditional, with no new oak used; ageing takes place in large old foudres and cement tanks to protect the wine’s purity and regional character.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with lamb, game, slow-roasted beef, Provençal stews, and richly seasoned Mediterranean dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening now, especially to allow the wine’s more complex aromas to fully unfold.
Producer
Clos des Papes has been one of the great names of Châteauneuf-du-Pape since the late 19th century, when the estate was already bottling under its own label in 1896. Paul Avril was deeply involved in the creation of the appellation, and today his grandson Paul-Vincent Avril continues the family legacy with the same commitment to tradition and quality. The estate has worked biodynamically and organically for nearly two decades and has been certified organic since 2011, earning widespread recognition for producing some of the region’s most respected age-worthy wines.
