Clos de l’Obac 1989 is a landmark Priorat red from the estate’s inaugural vintage, representing the beginning of the region’s modern fine-wine revival. Aged for more than three decades, it offers a rare opportunity to experience the depth, structure and individuality of historic Priorat from one of its pioneering producers.
Tasting Notes
With mature garnet colour and brick-red reflections, this wine is likely to show the evolved appearance of a well-cellared 1989 vintage. The nose may reveal dried red and black fruit, forest floor, leather, tobacco, spice and mineral nuances, with the characteristic smoky, earthy impression associated with Priorat’s llicorella soils.
On the palate, expect a structured yet mature profile, combining concentrated fruit with savoury complexity, warm spice and refined tertiary notes. The tannins should be softened by age, while a fresh mineral character may provide balance. As a mature wine, its condition will depend greatly on provenance and storage; it is best enjoyed now, although a well-preserved bottle may continue to develop over a short period.
Production
Clos de l’Obac is rooted in the steep, rugged vineyards of Priorat, where poor soils of dark slate—known locally as llicorella—force the vines to grow with naturally low yields and concentrated fruit. The estate’s red wines are traditionally based on a blend of local and international varieties, typically including Garnacha and Cariñena alongside grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot, though the exact composition of this historic vintage should be confirmed from the bottle or technical sheet. The 1989 vintage marks the estate’s first release and is produced in the traditional, concentrated style for which Priorat became renowned.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Decant carefully for approximately 30–60 minutes, primarily to separate any sediment, while tasting regularly to ensure the wine’s mature aromas remain expressive. Its savoury, developed character should pair well with roast lamb, braised beef, game, mushroom dishes, mature hard cheeses and richly seasoned Catalan cuisine.
Producer
Clos de l’Obac is one of the pioneering estates responsible for establishing Priorat as a source of internationally acclaimed fine wine. Founded by Daphne Glorian and associated with the region’s modern renaissance, the estate helped demonstrate the potential of Priorat’s steep slate vineyards and old-vine Mediterranean varieties. The 1989 vintage holds particular historical significance as the winery’s first, making this bottle both a mature wine and an important piece of Priorat’s modern history.
