Tasting Notes
On the palate, it is full-bodied yet remarkably refined, with black raspberry, black cherry, blueberry, and blackberry framed by notes of tobacco, spice, licorice, smoked meat, earthy gravel, and black truffle. The tannins are fine and firm, the balance is impressive, and the finish is long and resonant. While approachable after a few years in bottle, this 2017 has the structure to develop beautifully for 20 years or more, and likely much longer in a good cellar.

Production
Poetry comes from Cliff Lede’s estate vineyards in the Stags Leap District, an area prized for its warm days, cooling influences, and distinctive volcanic and alluvial soils that help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve both richness and freshness. The blend is built primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon, with supporting portions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The wine is aged for 21 months in French oak, which adds polish, spice, and complexity without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a serious Cabernet Sauvignon best served with equally substantial dishes such as grilled ribeye, lamb chops, braised short ribs, venison, or truffle-infused mushroom dishes. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening young, especially to allow the wine’s aromatics and tannins to fully unwind.
