Description
Clerc Milon 2021 is a poised, beautifully detailed Pauillac that shows how elegant the vintage can be in skilled hands. The wine opens with vivid dark berry fruit and a cool, minty blackcurrant character, wrapped in a silky yet structured frame. This Fifth Growth estate, owned by the Rothschild family, has steadily risen in prestige, and the 2021 is a refined, classically styled Bordeaux with impressive depth and layering.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Clerc Milon 2021 displays a deep, vibrant ruby colour with youthful purple reflections at the rim, hinting at its energy and longevity. The nose is precise and expressive: aromas of ripe blackcurrants and blackberries mingle with fresh mint, violet, graphite and a subtle pencil-shaving note, all underpinned by a gentle touch of cedar and fine oak.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, with a generous core of dark fruit framed by lively acidity that keeps everything bright and focused. Flavours of cassis, plum and blueberry are layered with tobacco leaf, crushed stones and a hint of cocoa. The tannins are sweet, fine-grained and chalky, lending structure without harshness, and the finish is long, precise and refreshing. While already harmonious in its youth, this 2021 has the balance and backbone to evolve gracefully over 10–15 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes with time in bottle.
Production
Château Clerc Milon lies on the gravelly ridges of Pauillac, in the northern Médoc, overlooking the Gironde estuary—prime Cabernet Sauvignon country. The vineyard’s classic left-bank terroir combines deep gravel, sand and pockets of clay-limestone, giving excellent drainage and naturally low yields, while encouraging slow, even ripening. The 2021 harvest was carried out parcel by parcel, often by hand, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfectly healthy, ripe berries made it into the final blend. The wine is typically a Cabernet Sauvignon–led Bordeaux blend, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and small proportions of Petit Verdot and Carmenère for additional fragrance, colour and spice. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats to preserve purity of fruit and definition of tannins, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a portion new), where the wine gains texture, aromatic complexity and polish without losing its fresh, classical profile.
Food & Serving
Clerc Milon 2021 is a natural partner for refined dishes featuring red meat and game: think roast lamb with herbs, ribeye steak, duck breast, or veal with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with slow-cooked beef, roast chicken with truffles, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its precision and aromatic lift. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours will help the wine open up and soften the tannins; as it matures and develops more tertiary notes, a shorter decant just before serving will be sufficient to fully express its complexity.
Producer
Château Clerc Milon is a classified Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru Classé) estate from the legendary 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, located in Pauillac between two First Growth neighbours, Mouton Rothschild and Lafite Rothschild. Originally formed from parcels of these prestigious estates, Clerc Milon owes its name to 18th-century owner Jean-Baptiste Clerc and the hamlet of Milon. The property was acquired by Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1970, and since then has undergone extensive investment in vineyards, cellar technology and vineyard management, dramatically raising quality and reputation. Today, under the stewardship of the Rothschild family, Clerc Milon is regarded as one of the most consistent and over-performing Fifth Growths in Bordeaux, celebrated for producing wines that combine Pauillac’s classic structure and graphite minerality with a modern sense of precision, purity and finesse.
