Description
Clemens Busch Riesling vom roten Schiefer Bio 2023 is an organically farmed Mosel Riesling that showcases the distinctive character of the region’s rare red slate soils. Compared to the estate’s blue-slate bottlings, this cuvée is typically a touch more generous and fruit-forward, while retaining Busch’s hallmark precision and tension. It’s a superb introduction to the estate’s terroir-driven style and a textbook example of modern, dry Mosel Riesling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a pale lemon color with green highlights, bright and youthful. The nose typically shows vibrant citrus and stone fruit—think lemon, lime, and white peach—layered with delicate floral tones reminiscent of elderflower, and hints of acacia honey. A distinctive, smoky-mineral edge betrays its red slate origins, adding depth and complexity.
On the palate, this Riesling is straight and focused, with a taut, lively acidity that keeps the ripe fruit in perfect balance. Juicy citrus and peach are wrapped in a fine, slate-driven minerality that brings both spice and a subtle, salty grip. The finish is long, precise, and refreshingly dry, with a light saline snap that encourages another sip. Enjoyable in its youth for its energy and clarity, it has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 3–6 years, gaining more complexity and textural depth.
Production
The grapes for Riesling vom roten Schiefer Bio come from steep Mosel vineyards rooted in weathered red slate, a warmer, iron-rich soil that tends to yield slightly more opulent, fruit-intense wines. All vines are farmed organically, with great emphasis on biodiversity and low-intervention viticulture, and the fruit is picked by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous selection on the slope. In the cellar, Clemens Busch works with a gentle, minimalist approach: careful pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and élevage on the fine lees—often in stainless steel and/or large traditional Mosel barrels—allow the character of the red slate and Riesling grape to shine without excessive winemaking imprint.
Food & Serving
This dry Mosel Riesling is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with freshwater fish, sushi and sashimi, ceviche, or lightly spiced Asian dishes such as Thai salads and Vietnamese spring rolls. It also complements roast chicken, pork schnitzel, and vegetable-based dishes featuring asparagus, fennel, or citrus. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10 °C (46–50 °F), to let the aromatics unfold. Decanting is not essential, but a brief time in the glass or a small carafe can help the wine open up and show its full aromatic range.
