Cigliano di Sopra Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Branca 2021 in magnum format is a pure, terroir-driven expression of Sangiovese from the heart of Tuscany. Crafted from a single, carefully selected vineyard parcel, this Riserva captures the elegance, depth and energy that define modern Chianti Classico at its best. The larger 1.5 L bottle format offers slower evolution and added complexity over time, making it ideal for both special occasions and serious cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chianti Classico Riserva shows a vibrant, deep ruby hue with garnet reflections at the rim. The nose is refined and expressive, offering layers of wild cherry, ripe red plum and raspberry, intertwined with notes of dried rose petals, blood orange, tobacco leaf, cedar and a gentle hint of Tuscan herbs and spice.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a precise, finely etched structure. Juicy Sangiovese fruit—think sour cherry, redcurrant and pomegranate—is supported by lively acidity and firm, polished tannins. Subtle nuances of leather, forest floor, sweet spices and a touch of balsamic emerge with air, leading to a long, savory finish that is both vibrant and poised. The 2021 vintage combines ripeness with freshness, and in magnum this Riserva has excellent aging potential, evolving beautifully over 10–15 years, and likely longer under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
Vigneto Branca is a single hillside vineyard in the Chianti Classico zone, rooted in classic Tuscan soils rich in galestro and alberese, which give Sangiovese its hallmark tension, minerality and aromatic lift. The vines benefit from warm days, cooling evening breezes and significant diurnal temperature shifts, helping to preserve acidity and finesse in the grapes. Harvest is typically carried out by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Sangiovese clusters are used for this Riserva. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with native or carefully selected yeasts, followed by a long maceration on the skins to extract color, aroma and fine-grained tannins. The wine is then aged—traditionally in large oak casks or a combination of large botti and neutral barrels—to respect the purity of the fruit and terroir, before further bottle aging to achieve the balance and complexity required for the Riserva designation.
Food & Serving
This Chianti Classico Riserva is a natural partner for classic Tuscan and Italian cuisine. It pairs beautifully with bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb chops, braised beef, game birds, wild boar ragù, and hearty pasta dishes such as pappardelle al cinghiale or tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms. Aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino Toscano and matured Asiago also make excellent companions. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the wine’s aromatic complexity and freshness. Given its structure and youth, especially in magnum, decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended to fully open up the nose and soften the tannins.
