Why shop with us?
Château Cheval Blanc 1994 is a distinguished Grand Cru Classé wine from Saint-Émilion, one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates. Known for combining the richness of Merlot with the aromatic lift and structure of Cabernet Franc, Cheval Blanc is prized for its elegance, longevity and distinctive character. This mature vintage offers an opportunity to experience a historic Right Bank wine at an appealing stage of development.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is likely to show a mature ruby colour with garnet and brick-red reflections. The nose should reveal classic developed Bordeaux aromas, including dried red and black berries, violet, cedar, tobacco, leather and earthy nuances, with the precise expression depending on storage conditions.
On the palate, the 1994 vintage is expected to be composed and savoury, with softened tannins, refreshing acidity and layers of dark fruit, spice, dried herbs and subtle oak. It should be approached as a mature wine: while well-stored bottles may continue to develop, its greatest appeal is likely to lie in drinking it now or in the near term rather than seeking further cellaring.
Production
Cheval Blanc’s vineyards lie on a complex mosaic of gravel, sand and clay soils in Saint-Émilion, with the estate’s distinctive terroir helping to give its wines both finesse and structure. The blend traditionally centres on Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon depending on the vintage and parcel. Grapes are harvested by hand and vinified parcel by parcel, followed by maturation in French oak. As a nearly three-decade-old bottle, provenance and storage history are particularly important when assessing its condition.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to acclimatise gently. A careful decant of around 30–60 minutes can help separate any sediment and open the wine, although older bottles should be monitored closely so that delicate aromas are not lost. Pair with classic dishes such as roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck, truffled mushrooms or mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château Cheval Blanc is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates and holds Premier Grand Cru Classé A status in the Saint-Émilion classification. Located near the boundary with Pomerol, the estate is renowned for wines that unite the plush texture of Merlot with the floral, finely structured character of Cabernet Franc. Its distinctive terroir, long history and consistently high standing have made Cheval Blanc one of the most sought-after names on Bordeaux’s Right Bank.
