Description

Château Valandraud 2000 is a standout Saint-Émilion wine from the pioneering garage-wine estate of Jean-Luc Thunevin. Made from Cabernet Franc and praised by Robert Parker with 95 points, it combines depth, precision and remarkable energy in a style that helped redefine modern Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a very dark core with only a thin crimson rim, hinting at both concentration and maturity. The nose is highly expressive and layered, with intense black cherry and blackcurrant, followed by sandalwood, cedar and warming spice notes that continue to unfold over time. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully composed, with supple red and black fruit, fine tannins and perfectly balanced acidity. While it still has a slightly reserved, backward character, the wine carries impressive tension and a long, focused finish. It should continue to drink well, with the structure and balance to age gracefully further.

Production
Produced in Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, Château Valandraud reflects the character of the estate’s careful, small-scale approach. The 2000 vintage is based on Cabernet Franc, a grape that can thrive in the right clay-limestone terroir by delivering aromatic complexity, freshness and finesse. The wine is vinified with an emphasis on concentration and precision, resulting in a polished yet expressive Bordeaux.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with duck breast, beef tenderloin, roast lamb or earthy mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for an hour or two if opening now, especially to allow the aromatics and structure to fully open.

Producer
Château Valandraud was founded by Jean-Luc Thunevin and is one of the most famous names to emerge from Bordeaux’s ‘garage wine’ movement. Based in Saint-Émilion, the estate gained international recognition for its meticulous, small-production wines and has since become one of the region’s most influential modern success stories.
