Description

Château Valade Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2018 is a classic Right Bank Bordeaux that showcases the elegance and depth of Merlot-driven wines. From a tiny, family-owned estate, this cuvée offers a refined balance of ripe fruit, freshness and structure, true to its Saint-Émilion terroir. Produced in very limited quantities from vines tended by the same family for five generations, it’s a bottle that feels personal and handcrafted rather than mass-produced.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2018 Grand Cru shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with purple highlights at the rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose typically opens with aromas of ripe black cherry and plum, supported by notes of cassis, violets, and subtle dried herbs, layered with touches of cedar, graphite and a gentle sweetness of vanilla or baking spice from oak aging. On the palate, expect a medium to full-bodied red with smooth, fine-grained tannins and a core of dark berry fruit—think black cherry, blackberry and damson—wrapped in hints of cocoa, tobacco leaf and a delicate earthy minerality. The high Merlot proportion brings plush texture and roundness, while the Cabernet Franc adds lift, floral tones and a fresh, slightly spicy edge. The 2018 vintage in Bordeaux offers ripe fruit and good balance, so this wine is enjoyable now with some aeration, but it also has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 6–10 years under good cellar conditions.

Production
Château Valade farms just 4 hectares of vineyards in Saint-Émilion, a small patchwork of clay- and limestone-influenced soils that are so closely associated with the appellation’s supple yet age-worthy wines. The plantings are dominated by Merlot (95%) with a touch of Cabernet Franc (5%), a classic Right Bank blend that emphasizes fruit, finesse and aromatic complexity. On such a small estate, vineyard work tends to be highly hands-on, with careful attention to pruning, canopy management and harvest timing to ensure optimal ripeness and healthy fruit. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel, then sorted before fermentation to retain only the best berries. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled vessels, allowing for a gentle extraction of color and tannin, followed by maturation in a mix of oak barrels and/or vats to integrate structure, soften the tannins and add subtle complexity without overwhelming the fruit.

Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a versatile partner for classic French and Mediterranean dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, duck breast, beef tenderloin, confit or grilled poultry, as well as earthy dishes like mushroom risotto, lentils with herbs, or gratins featuring root vegetables and hard cheeses. It also works well alongside semi-hard and hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or a well-matured cheddar. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 45–60 minutes before serving will help the wine open up, softening the tannins and allowing the aromatic layers of dark fruit, spice and earth to fully express themselves, especially while the wine is still relatively young.

Producer
Château Valade is a traditional, family-owned estate that has been passed down through five generations, a continuity that reflects the deep-rooted wine culture of Saint-Émilion. With only 4 hectares under vine and an annual production of around 6,000 bottles, the property operates on an artisanal scale, focusing on quality and character rather than volume. This long family stewardship and small size allow for meticulous work in both vineyard and cellar, giving Château Valade a quiet but respected presence in the region. As part of the broader Saint-Émilion Grand Cru landscape, the estate contributes to the area’s reputation for Merlot-based wines that combine approachability, finesse and the capacity to age gracefully.
