Description

Château Troplong Mondot 2005 is a standout Saint-Émilion from one of Bordeaux’s most respected Right Bank estates. Deep, powerful, and remarkably refined, it captures both the richness of Merlot and the precision of a great terroir, while also standing as a tribute to the estate’s transformational rise under Christine Valette.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a dense, deep purple color that still looks impressively youthful. The bouquet is layered and expressive, unfolding with notes of blackberry, cassis, licorice, white chocolate, and a subtle hint of truffle, all framed by discreet oak spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich, and multi-dimensional, with a striking sense of purity and concentration. The texture is opulent yet polished, with well-integrated structure and a long, persistent finish. Despite its maturity, it remains remarkably youthful and has the balance to age gracefully for many more years.

Production
Château Troplong Mondot covers 43 hectares on the slopes above Saint-Émilion, where clay-limestone soils and an elevated position help shape a wine of power and finesse. The 2005 vintage is made from 90% Merlot with the remainder Cabernet Franc, and the fruit was carefully selected to reflect the estate’s commitment to precision and quality. In the cellar, the estate uses modern sorting techniques and employs micro-fermentation in 600-liter barrels for part of the harvest, allowing for greater flexibility in blending. By this period, Troplong Mondot was also increasing biodiversity in the vineyards, with organic parcel farming, horse ploughing, and a growing respect for the land influencing both viticulture and final style.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for classic, richly flavoured dishes such as roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, venison, or truffle-infused cuisine. It also pairs beautifully with hard cheeses and earthy mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to let the wine fully open.

Producer
Château Troplong Mondot traces its history back to 1745, when Abbe Raymond de Seze built the château above Saint-Émilion. After changing hands several times, it entered the Valette family in 1936, and from 1980 onward Christine Valette and Xavier Pariente led a remarkable period of investment and quality-focused renewal that elevated the estate to the top tier of Saint-Émilion. Their efforts were formally recognized in 2006, when the château was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé B, a status it has retained.
