Description
Château Tertre Roteboeuf 2005 is a richly expressive Saint-Émilion from one of Bordeaux’s most singular estates, celebrated for its depth, perfume, and luxurious texture. Produced by François Mitjavile, this Cabernet Franc-led wine has earned a cult reputation for combining power with remarkable finesse and longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a dense ruby-purple color that signals both concentration and maturity. The nose is immediately captivating, with layers of sweet blackcurrants, jammy cherries, licorice, and warming spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and opulent, with high but beautifully polished tannins that give the wine a velvety, seamless feel. The finish is exceptionally long and persistent, and while it is already impressive, it has the structure to age gracefully for two decades or more.
Production
Tertre Roteboeuf sits on one of Saint-Émilion’s most distinctive terroirs, where careful vineyard work and low yields help produce deeply concentrated fruit. The 2005 vintage was shaped by a warm, successful growing season, and the wine was crafted with a focus on ripeness, texture, and aromatic complexity. François Mitjavile is known for his intuitive, hands-on approach in both vineyard and cellar, resulting in wines that are generous, layered, and unmistakably individual.
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for richly flavored dishes such as roast duck, braised beef, lamb, game, or truffle-infused dishes. It also pairs beautifully with hard, aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking now, especially given the large-format bottle, to allow the aromatics and structure to fully unfold.
Producer
Château Tertre Roteboeuf, led by François Mitjavile, is one of Saint-Émilion’s most respected and distinctive estates. Though relatively small, it has achieved an outsized reputation for producing wines of exceptional character, sensuality, and ageworthiness. The estate’s 2005 is widely regarded as one of its most profound wines and stands as a benchmark for the estate’s style and success.
