Description
Château Ségur de Cabanac 2018 is a classic Saint-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois, crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot adding supple charm. This is a structured, characterful Left Bank Bordeaux that balances power with elegance, making it ideal both for current enjoyment and cellaring. Rooted in a family tradition spanning seven generations in the Médoc, it reflects the Delon family’s deep understanding of their terroir and the enduring style of Saint-Estèphe.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Ségur de Cabanac typically shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with hints of purple at the rim, indicating both concentration and youth. The nose opens with classic Saint-Estèphe notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark cherry, layered with cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite, and a touch of dried herbs and spice from careful oak aging.
On the palate, expect a medium to full-bodied wine with firm but polished tannins and a fresh, persistent acidity that keeps the dark fruit focused and lively. Blackcurrant, plum, and black cherry dominate, supported by notes of pencil shavings, cocoa, and a subtle savory edge that is very typical of the appellation. The finish is long, structured and mineral, with a pleasant grip that suggests very good aging potential. 2018 is a ripe, generous vintage in Bordeaux, so this wine can be enjoyed now with a short decant, but will reward patience over the next 8–15 years, gaining complexity and softness with time in the cellar.
Production
Château Ségur de Cabanac sits in the northern Médoc, in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, where deep gravelly soils mixed with clay provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The estate’s 7 hectares are planted with approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, a classic Left Bank blend that naturally delivers structure, freshness, and depth of fruit. Grapes are typically harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, often by hand or with great care, to preserve the integrity of the berries and reflect the nuances of each plot. In the cellar, traditional Bordeaux vinification is employed: controlled fermentation in temperature-regulated tanks to extract color, aroma, and tannin, followed by aging in French oak barrels to refine the tannic structure and add complexity without overshadowing the character of the fruit or the Saint-Estèphe terroir. The guidance of renowned consulting oenologist Éric Boissenot helps ensure precision and balance from vineyard to bottle.
Food & Serving
Château Ségur de Cabanac 2018 is a natural partner for classic, flavorful dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, entrecôte or ribeye steak, duck breast, and slow-braised beef or veal. It also pairs beautifully with hearty casseroles, game birds, mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight the wine’s aromatics and balance. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the tannins to soften and the bouquet to fully open; as the wine ages and the structure mellows, a shorter decant will generally be sufficient.
Producer
Château Ségur de Cabanac is a respected Cru Bourgeois estate in Saint-Estèphe, owned by the Delon family, who have been making wine in the Médoc for seven generations. With the expertise of consulting oenologist Éric Boissenot, one of Bordeaux’s most sought-after advisors, Château Ségur de Cabanac has solidified its reputation for producing wines that deliver authentic Saint-Estèphe typicity, reliable quality, and excellent value within the Cru Bourgeois category.
