Description

This rare mixed-vintage case from Château Pontet-Canet brings together some of the estate’s most talked-about wines from the 1990s, a decade that marked a major turning point for the property. Sourced from Pauillac in Bordeaux, it offers a fascinating look at the evolution of a classic Left Bank château just as it was beginning its transformation toward modern biodynamic greatness.

Tasting Notes
As a collection, the wines show the deep, dark-fruited Pauillac profile Pontet-Canet is known for, with varying degrees of cassis, blackberry, tobacco, cedar, earth, and spice depending on the vintage. The stronger years such as 1990, 1994, 1995, and 1996 are typically dense, structured, and highly age-worthy, while 1998 and 1999 lean more toward elegance, secondary complexity, and earlier drinking pleasure. In the glass, expect shades of opaque purple through mature ruby, with aromas that can range from smoky blackcurrant and graphite to dried herbs, incense, and leather. On the palate, the best vintages are powerful and layered, with firm tannins, bright acidity, and a long finish; the more evolved wines show softer textures and graceful savory complexity. Several of these bottles are capable of long cellaring, though many are now entering or well into their peak drinking window.

Production
Château Pontet-Canet is located in Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravel soils and excellent drainage help Cabernet Sauvignon thrive alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The estate’s vineyards, now farmed with a strong biodynamic focus, reflect a deep commitment to working in harmony with the land rather than forcing production through it. During the 1990s, Pontet-Canet was already raising quality through stricter vineyard work and cellar improvements under the Tesseron family and manager Jean-Michel Comme. The wines from this period were vinified in the classic Bordeaux style, with careful extraction and oak élevage, while later years began to show the influence of more precise, natural vineyard management and a move toward biodynamic practices.

Food & Serving
These wines pair beautifully with classic Bordeaux fare such as roast lamb, beef Wellington, duck breast, ribeye steak, or game dishes with mushroom and herb sauces. Mature vintages also work well with truffle-based dishes, hard aged cheeses, and slow-braised meats. Serve at around 16-18°C, and for the older bottles, open gently and decant only if needed to remove sediment; younger or more structured bottles may benefit from 1-2 hours of decanting.

Producer
Château Pontet-Canet is one of Pauillac’s most respected estates, with roots reaching back to the early 18th century. After passing through several hands over the years, the property was purchased by Guy Tesseron in 1975, and later led by Alfred Tesseron, who helped elevate the estate into a benchmark for quality and sustainability in Bordeaux. In 2005, Pontet-Canet became the first classified growth from the 1855 ranking to be both organically and biodynamically certified, cementing its reputation as one of the region’s most innovative and forward-thinking producers.
