Description

Pichon Comtesse Reserve 2019 is the second wine of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, offering Pauillac class with impressive charm, balance, and pedigree. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, it captures the estate’s signature finesse in a more open, generous style, while still promising serious aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 shows a deep garnet-purple hue, hinting at its depth and concentration. The bouquet opens with dark berries, cassis, black and red plums, stewed cherries, cedar, tobacco leaf, violets, spice cake, and a subtle floral lift, all framed by fine oak and classic Pauillac graphite notes. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, plush yet energetic, with a seamless texture and a refined, supple tannic structure. The fruit is rich and ripe without losing freshness, leading to a long finish marked by plum preserve, spice, pencil shavings, and a touch of earthy complexity. While already highly expressive, it has the structure and balance to develop beautifully over the next 15–20 years, and likely beyond in a great cellar.

Production
The estate’s vineyards lie on prized deep gravel soils in southern Pauillac, close to the Gironde estuary and next to Château Latour, with additional parcels in Saint-Julien legally vinified as Pauillac. This terroir is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, which dominates the blend, alongside Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The wine is vinified parcel by parcel to preserve the character of each site, then aged for around 12 months in oak barrels, with 25–40% new wood depending on the vintage.

Food & Serving
This is a classic match for roasted beef, lamb, duck breast, game birds, mushroom dishes, and slow-braised short ribs. It also works well with hard cheeses and truffle-rich dishes. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine’s layered aromatics and polished tannins to fully open.

Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Pauillac’s great historic estates, founded in 1689 and divided after Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville’s death in the mid-19th century. The property rose to prominence as a Second Growth in the 1855 classification, and later gained renewed global acclaim under May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, who modernized the estate and expanded the vineyard holdings. Since 2007, it has been owned by the Rouzaud family, who have continued to invest heavily in the cellar and vineyard, reinforcing the château’s status as one of Bordeaux’s most admired names.
