Description
Pichon Comtesse Réserve 2018 is the second wine from one of Pauillac’s most iconic estates, offering a remarkably polished introduction to the estate’s style. Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it brings the depth and finesse of a classified growth Bordeaux with a more approachable, generous profile. The name carries a long and storied history stretching back to the 17th century, with a legacy shaped by strong women, major reinvestment and a reputation for refinement.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a deep ruby colour with youthful intensity and a refined sheen. The nose is typically expressive and seductive, with ripe blackcurrant, plum and red cherry layered over cedar, cigar box, pencil shavings, violets and a discreet touch of truffle.
On the palate, the wine is supple and beautifully textured, with a rounded, silky mouthfeel that sets it apart from many more tannic Médoc wines. The fruit is well-framed by fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins, giving the wine both charm and structure. While already appealing in youth, it should develop gracefully over the next 8 to 15 years, gaining more earthy and savoury complexity with time.
Production
The grapes come from the estate’s gravelly soils in southern Pauillac, close to the Gironde estuary, where the Cabernet Sauvignon thrives alongside Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The vineyards benefit from a privileged maritime influence and excellent drainage, and parcels are vinified separately in a modern, three-level cellar to preserve each site’s character. The Réserve de la Comtesse is aged for around 12 months in French oak, with 25-40% new barrels depending on the vintage.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds and mushroom-based dishes, as well as hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16-18°C and consider decanting for 1-2 hours if drinking young, especially to allow the aromatics and tannins to खुल fully.
Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Pauillac’s most admired estates, founded in 1689 and classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Its history is closely tied to Virginie Pichon Longueville and later May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, whose tenure brought major expansion and renewed prestige. Since 2007, the estate has been owned by the Rouzaud family, who have continued to invest heavily in the vineyard and winery, reinforcing its status as one of Bordeaux’s most elegant and distinctive names.
