Description

Château Pichon-Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville 2016 Magnum is one of Pauillac’s most admired “super seconds,” delivering the depth, precision, and authority you’d expect from a great Bordeaux Classé. Made from a classic Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend, this grand vin shows why Pichon Baron is often spoken of in the same breath as the region’s First Growths. The magnum format is especially appealing for collectors, offering ideal conditions for graceful evolution over time.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep garnet-purple colour with impressive concentration. The nose is layered and refined, with warm red and black currants, black plum, crème de cassis, graphite, truffle, tapenade, sandalwood, rosehip tea, and a subtle mineral edge that recalls iron and lead pencil shavings. The palate is full-bodied and tightly structured, yet polished and seductive, with sweet tannins and a dense core of black fruit, exotic spice, and mineral freshness. It has the balance and power to age beautifully for decades; while already approachable with time in bottle, the 2016 vintage is built to develop for 30 years or more.

Production
The wine comes from carefully selected parcels in Pauillac, where gravelly soils and the maritime climate of Bordeaux help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve ripeness, structure, and aromatic precision. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, with rigorous bunch selection based on vine age, plot, and ripeness level to ensure only top-quality fruit enters the grand vin. Fermentation and maceration are carefully managed before the wine is matured in French oak, with a high proportion of new barrels to add complexity and definition.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for classic Bordeaux pairings such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, ribeye, game, or duck breast with earthy sauces. It also works beautifully with truffle dishes, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–3 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open and soften.

Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Baron traces its origins back to 1689 and was later split into two estates following the death of Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville in 1850. Both were classified as Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, but it was under AXA ownership from the 1980s, with Jean-Michel Cazes guiding the transformation, that Pichon Baron regained its place among Bordeaux’s elite. Today it is regarded as one of Pauillac’s benchmark estates, known for precision, power, and consistently exceptional wines.
