Description

Château Pichon-Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville 2009 is a benchmark Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most respected “super seconds.” Made only from the estate’s best fruit, it combines power, precision, and remarkable finesse in a style that has long been considered capable of challenging even some First Growths. The 2009 vintage is especially celebrated for its depth and opulence, with critics describing it as one of the finest wines the château has ever produced.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, opaque blue-purple colour that hints at its concentration and structure. The bouquet is layered and expressive, opening with blackberries, blueberries, spring flowers, graphite, smoky charcoal, incense, and subtle notes of coffee and chocolate. On the palate, the wine is rich and vividly composed, with intense fruit, polished tannins, and a sense of freshness that keeps the richness in balance. It has a broad, luxurious texture, but remains impeccably structured and precise. This is a wine with excellent ageing potential and is widely expected to drink beautifully for decades.

Production
The grapes come from carefully managed Pauillac vineyards, where work in the vines is adapted to each vintage’s weather conditions. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, and each parcel is selected with great care according to grape variety, vine age, and plot, ensuring only the best fruit makes it into the Grand Vin. At the winery, fermentation and maceration are carried out with precision to extract colour, tannin, and aromatic complexity. The wine undergoes a long vinification period and malolactic fermentation before selected lots are transferred to barrel for ageing in the cellar’s semi-darkness. The final blend is assembled after tasting more than 40 individual wines, reflecting the estate’s meticulous approach to quality.

Food & Serving
This is an ideal match for refined, flavourful dishes such as grilled ribeye, roast lamb, duck breast, venison, or slow-braised beef. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, mushroom risotto, and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young to help the wine open fully.

Producer
Château Pichon Longueville Baron has deep roots in Bordeaux, founded in 1689 and later divided in 1850 following the death of Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville. In the 1855 Classification, it was ranked as a Second Growth, and over time it has built a reputation as one of Pauillac’s greatest estates. Major investment after its acquisition by AXA in the 1980s, along with strong leadership and a renewed focus on precision in the vineyard and cellar, helped restore the château to the very top tier of Bordeaux producers.
