Description
Château Phélan Ségur Saint-Estèphe 2021 is a poised, classically styled Médoc that overdelivers for its status, comfortably rivaling many Classified Growths in the appellation. This is a Cabernet-driven Bordeaux with real depth and finesse, crafted from some of the most beautifully sited vineyards overlooking the Gironde estuary. Long considered one of the benchmark estates of Saint-Estèphe, Phélan Ségur unites nearly two centuries of history with a very contemporary attention to detail in the cellar and vineyard.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 shows a vibrant ruby-red core with youthful purple highlights at the rim, underscoring its freshness and energy. The nose is immediately captivating, combining aromas of juicy red berries and blackcurrants with notes of crushed violets and old rose petals, layered over hints of subtle spice, graphite and a whisper of cedar.
On the palate, the wine is precise, lively and beautifully composed, with a cool-fruited profile that reflects the vintage. Ripe red and black fruits are wrapped in a tight, finely woven structure, where refined, delicate tannins provide both texture and length without ever feeling heavy. There is an appealing tension between concentration and elegance, leading to a long, savory, mineral-inflected finish that is very much in the timeless Phélan Ségur style. Enjoyable in its youth with a short decant, it has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years, and potentially longer in good cellars.
Production
Château Phélan Ségur’s 70 hectares of vines lie on the classic gravelly hilltops of Saint-Estèphe, with deep gravel, clay and limestone soils that naturally favor Cabernet Sauvignon and lend both power and freshness to the wines. Benefiting from the tempering influence of the nearby Gironde, the vineyards are carefully managed and harvested parcel by parcel, with the 2021 grapes picked between 29 September and 13 October to capture optimal ripeness and balance. The blend for this vintage is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, vinified in temperature-controlled vats with a focus on gentle extraction to preserve purity of fruit and fine tannin. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, allowing the wine to gain complexity and polish while retaining the estate’s signature precision and clarity.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Estèphe is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, entrecôte with Béarnaise, braised beef or veal, and game birds like duck or guinea fowl. It also works beautifully with earthy mushroom dishes, truffled poultry, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C to bring out its aromatic complexity and supple structure. In its youth, a decant of 1–2 hours will help the wine open and soften the tannins; as it matures, a shorter decant simply to remove sediment and awaken the bouquet will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Phélan Ségur traces its origins back to the early 1800s, when the young Irish wine merchant Bernard Phelan united the Cos de Garramey and Domaine Ségur de Cabanac estates and built both the château and winery as a single, integrated property. His son Frank Phelan, who later gave the estate its current name, spent decades improving the vineyards and became a central figure in Saint-Estèphe, even serving as mayor of the village for around 30 years. Though not included in the 1855 Classification, Phélan Ségur has long been regarded as one of the great overachievers of the Médoc, and under the Gardinier family from 1985 onward it underwent major vineyard and cellar renovations that propelled quality to a new level. Since 2018, the estate has been owned by Philippe Van de Vyvere, who has continued this pursuit of excellence, cementing Phélan Ségur’s reputation as one of Saint-Estèphe’s most reliable and exciting names.
