Description
Château Palmer 2003 is a superb expression of Margaux, combining power, perfume, and finesse in a style that has made the estate one of Bordeaux’s most coveted names. Although classified as a Third Growth in 1855, Palmer is widely regarded as performing at a far higher level, and this vintage shows the elegance and depth collectors expect from the château.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, youthful-to-mature Bordeaux color with remarkable concentration. The nose opens with intense blackcurrant, blackberry, violet, cedar, graphite, tobacco, and warm spice, all wrapped in the estate’s signature floral lift.
On the palate, Château Palmer 2003 is silky and expansive, with ripe dark fruit, refined structure, and beautifully integrated tannins. There is real depth here, but also precision and grace, with a long, layered finish that reflects both the vintage and the estate’s exceptional balance. It has excellent aging potential and, for many, is already entering a superb drinking window while still having the structure to evolve further over time.
Production
The grapes come from the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, where Palmer’s vineyards are farmed biodynamically with close attention to the natural environment and terroir. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot is carefully managed to reflect the character of each parcel, with harvesting done by hand to ensure only the best fruit is selected.
Vinification is aimed at preserving purity, detail, and freshness while building the structure needed for long aging. The result is a wine that captures both the warmth of the 2003 vintage and the precision that defines Château Palmer.
Food & Serving
Serve this wine with richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck breast, or mushroom-based dishes. It is best enjoyed at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended if the bottle is still youthful or has been recently opened, to allow the aromas and texture to fully unfold.
Producer
Château Palmer is one of the great names of Margaux and a reference point for elegant, age-worthy Bordeaux. Despite its Third Growth status in the 1855 classification, the estate has long been admired for producing wines that often rival Bordeaux’s most famous classified growths. Its biodynamic approach and consistent critical acclaim have further strengthened its reputation among collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
