Description
Château Nénin Pomerol 2020 is a refined Right Bank Bordeaux that captures the elegance and depth of modern Pomerol. Dominated by Merlot, this vintage combines soft, plush fruit with the structure and freshness that have made 2020 one of the most exciting recent Bordeaux years. It’s a polished, ageworthy red that balances approachability in its youth with clear cellaring potential. What sets Château Nénin apart is its large, contiguous vineyard on Pomerol’s prized plateau, giving the wine a sense of breadth and precision that’s distinctive in the appellation. Here, Merlot takes on a particularly noble expression: concentrated yet poised, with fine tannins and a long, poised finish. The estate’s history dates back to the 19th century and, under the stewardship of the Delon family (of Château Léoville Las Cases fame), Nénin has been elevated into the upper echelon of Pomerol châteaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Château Nénin Pomerol 2020 shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple color, hinting at both intensity and youth. The rim is bright and lively, suggesting excellent freshness and energy.
The nose is aromatic and layered, with ripe black plum, black cherry and crushed blackberry at the core. Notes of violets, graphite, cocoa, cedar and a touch of baking spice from quality French oak add complexity. With air, subtle hints of licorice, tobacco leaf and wet stone emerge, underlining its Pomerol roots.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a silky, almost velvety texture typical of Merlot from top Right Bank terroir. Ripe dark fruit flavors—plum, black cherry and cassis—are framed by fine-grained tannins and a fresh, lifted acidity that keeps the wine driven and precise rather than heavy. Layers of dark chocolate, graphite, truffle and a gentle savoriness unfold toward a long, focused finish. The balance between fruit, structure and oak suggests a wine that will evolve beautifully.
The 2020 vintage has excellent aging potential. While it can be enjoyed after a few hours in a decanter now, it will really start to hit its stride after 5–7 years in bottle and can comfortably develop over 12–20 years in a good cellar, gaining more complexity, softness and the classic Pomerol notes of truffle and forest floor.
Production
Château Nénin’s vineyards lie on the Pomerol plateau, where a mix of clay, gravel and sand over a firm subsoil provides ideal conditions for Merlot to achieve both ripeness and finesse. The clay brings depth and power to the wine, while the gravel and sand contribute elegance, aromatics and fine tannin. Vines are carefully managed throughout the growing season, with green harvesting and canopy work to ensure even ripening, and the grapes are picked parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, largely by hand to protect berry integrity.
In the cellar, the 2020 vintage benefitted from meticulous sorting before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, allowing each plot to be vinified separately to capture its character. Macerations are tailored to each lot to gently extract color, flavor and tannins without harshness. After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new (typically around one-third), for roughly 15–18 months. This élevage polishes the tannins and adds subtle notes of spice and toast while keeping the emphasis firmly on the purity of fruit and the identity of the Pomerol terroir.
Food & Serving
Château Nénin Pomerol 2020 is a versatile yet refined food wine that shines alongside classic, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast or veal, as well as earthy, mushroom-based dishes and truffle risottos that echo Pomerol’s signature nuances. Rich poultry preparations, game birds and aged hard cheeses (such as Comté or aged Gouda) are also excellent companions.
Serve this wine at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. For current drinking, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to open and soften. As it ages and the tannins integrate, a shorter decant of around 30–45 minutes will generally be sufficient to bring out its full expression.
Producer
Château Nénin is one of the historic properties of Pomerol, with roots that stretch back to the 19th century. Once owned by the Despujol family, the estate entered a new era in 1997 when it was acquired by the Delon family, renowned proprietors of Château Léoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien. Their involvement brought significant investment in the vineyards and cellar, along with a renewed focus on precision and terroir expression.
Today, Château Nénin is recognized as a leading estate in Pomerol, notable for its unusually large, single-block vineyard on the plateau. The château has steadily climbed in reputation thanks to its combination of classical structure, modern refinement and consistency across vintages. Under the Delon family’s guidance, Nénin has become a reference point for those seeking a Pomerol that combines depth and generosity with clarity, freshness and the ability to age gracefully.
