Château Musar 1994 is a mature and highly distinctive Lebanese red from one of the Middle East’s most celebrated wineries. Produced in the Bekaa Valley from traditionally cultivated vineyards and shaped by extended bottle ageing, it offers a rare opportunity to experience the depth and character of an organically made, age-worthy wine with a remarkable sense of place.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is expected to show a deep garnet colour with brick-red edges, reflecting its considerable bottle age. The nose is complex and evolving, with aromas of dried red and black fruit, cedar, tobacco, leather, spice and earthy, savoury nuances. On the palate, it combines mature fruit with developed tertiary notes, refreshing acidity and fine, resolved tannins. Its structure and balance should allow it to continue drinking well, provided the bottle has been stored in suitable conditions.
As with many mature Château Musar wines, the expression can develop considerably after opening. Expect a layered, individual style rather than a polished, fruit-forward profile, with a long finish marked by spice, dried fruit and mineral savouriness.
Production
The wine is made from grapes grown in the Bekaa Valley, a high-altitude region with sunny days, cool nights and generally dry conditions that help preserve freshness in the fruit. Château Musar’s red wines are traditionally produced from a blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan, with the varieties vinified separately before blending. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented with a traditional, minimally interventionist approach and matured in oak before extended bottle ageing. The resulting wine is known for its distinctive evolution and ability to develop complexity over many years.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Given its age, stand the bottle upright before opening and pour carefully to avoid disturbing any sediment. A cautious decant of 30–60 minutes may help open the wine, although older bottles should be tasted shortly after opening and not left in a decanter for too long. Pair it with roast lamb, slow-cooked beef, game, mushroom dishes, aubergine, or mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, Château Musar is one of Lebanon’s historic wine producers and a leading ambassador for Lebanese wine internationally. The estate’s vineyards are located in the Bekaa Valley, while the winery itself is based in Ghazir, near Beirut. Château Musar gained wide recognition through its appearance at the 1979 Bristol Wine Fair, and Serge Hochar was named Decanter’s Man of the Year in 1984. The estate remains renowned for its traditional methods, long-lived wines and unmistakably individual style.
