Château Musar 1991 is a remarkable Lebanese red from one of the world’s most distinctive and historically important wineries. Produced in the Bekaa Valley from a traditional blend of Mediterranean and Bordeaux varieties, it is renowned for its longevity, individuality and ability to express both vintage character and the rugged landscape of Lebanon.
Tasting Notes
With more than three decades of bottle age, this mature red is likely to show a deep garnet colour with brick-red and amber hues at the rim. The bouquet can be wonderfully complex, combining dried red and black fruit with cedar, tobacco leaf, leather, earthy spice and subtle balsamic notes. As the wine opens, further layers of dried herbs, dark chocolate and savoury nuances may emerge.
The palate is typically elegant rather than heavy, with mature fruit, fresh acidity and refined, gently grained tannins providing structure. Its long finish is marked by spice, leather and earthy complexity. Château Musar is known for developing beautifully in bottle, although, at this age, condition and storage history are particularly important and some bottle variation should be expected.
Production
The grapes are sourced from the high-altitude Bekaa Valley, where dry conditions, strong sunlight, cool nights and limestone- and gravel-influenced soils help preserve freshness in the fruit. Château Musar traditionally works with a blend built around Cinsault, Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon, with the varieties harvested separately by hand. Fermentation takes place with a low-intervention approach, followed by maturation in oak and extended bottle ageing at the winery before release. The wine is characteristically made to develop over many years and may be bottled without heavy clarification or filtration.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Carefully decant for approximately 1–2 hours, tasting as you go; older bottles may benefit from gentle separation from sediment rather than prolonged exposure to air. Its mature savoury character pairs beautifully with roast lamb, slow-cooked beef, game, mushroom dishes and richly spiced Lebanese or Levantine cuisine. It is also compelling with aged hard cheeses and can be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine.
Producer
Founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, Château Musar has become Lebanon’s most internationally recognised winery and a leading ambassador for the Bekaa Valley. The estate gained particular attention under Serge Hochar, whose long-ageing, low-intervention approach helped establish Château Musar as a cult classic among collectors and sommeliers. Despite Lebanon’s challenging modern history, the winery has maintained its distinctive style and remains celebrated for producing complex, age-worthy wines with a strong sense of place.
