Château Musar 1989 is a distinguished Lebanese red from one of the Bekaa Valley’s most celebrated estates. Known for its distinctive, age-worthy style and ability to express Lebanon’s ancient winemaking heritage, this mature vintage offers a fascinating alternative to classic European reds. Founded in 1930, Château Musar gained international recognition for producing wines of remarkable character, even during Lebanon’s turbulent years.
Tasting Notes
With bottle age, the wine is expected to show a deep garnet colour, potentially developing brick-red hues at the rim. The mature bouquet may reveal dried red and black fruit, cedar, tobacco, leather, spice, earthy tones and subtle balsamic notes, with the exact profile influenced by bottle condition and storage.
On the palate, Château Musar’s traditional blend typically combines ripe fruit with lively acidity, savoury complexity and fine, evolving tannins. The 1989 vintage should be approached as a mature wine: it may be drinking beautifully now, while well-stored bottles can still offer depth and development. As with any wine of this age, allowing it to breathe gradually is recommended rather than expecting youthful fruit intensity.
Production
The wine is made from traditional Château Musar red varieties, principally Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan, grown in the high-altitude Bekaa Valley. The region’s sunny, dry climate, cool nights and varied limestone and gravelly soils help preserve freshness while allowing full ripeness. The grapes are harvested by hand and vinified separately before being blended and matured in oak and bottle, giving the wine its characteristic combination of Mediterranean richness, freshness and long-term complexity.
Food & Serving
This mature red is well suited to roasted lamb, beef, slow-cooked meats, game and richly flavoured Middle Eastern dishes such as kibbeh, grilled meat and spiced aubergine. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Because the 1989 vintage is mature, stand the bottle upright before opening and decant carefully to separate any sediment; a short period of gentle aeration is preferable, as extended exposure to air may cause an older bottle to fade.
Producer
Château Musar was established in 1930 by Gaston Hochar and remains one of Lebanon’s best-known wine producers. The estate is based near Ghazir, while its vineyards lie largely in the Bekaa Valley, where the Hochar family has helped place Lebanese wine on the international stage. Serge Hochar, who led the estate for many years, became the first Lebanese Master of Wine in 1984, and Château Musar’s distinctive, naturally expressive wines have since earned a loyal following among collectors and adventurous wine enthusiasts.
