Description

Château Mouton Rothschild 1978 is a historic Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates. Now fully mature, this Cabernet Sauvignon-led First Growth offers the opportunity to explore the evolution of a distinguished Médoc wine, although the noted low fill level (“bad filling”) should be taken into account when assessing its condition and drinking potential.

Tasting Notes
At this stage, the wine may show a deep garnet colour with brick-red or amber hues at the rim. Mature aromas can include cedar, tobacco leaf, dried cassis, leather, forest floor and subtle earthy spice, with the exact expression influenced by the bottle’s storage history and fill level. On the palate, a well-preserved bottle may offer developed dark-fruit flavours, savoury complexity and softened tannins, finishing with the classic structured character associated with Pauillac. Given its age and the low fill, it is best approached as a mature, condition-sensitive bottle rather than one intended for extended cellaring; drink soon after purchase and inspect carefully upon opening.

Production
Château Mouton Rothschild is situated in Pauillac, where gravelly soils over clay and limestone encourage deep-rooted Cabernet Sauvignon and contribute to the appellation’s hallmark combination of structure, fragrance and longevity. The estate’s wines are traditionally produced from Bordeaux varieties, with grapes harvested selectively and vinified parcel by parcel before maturation in French oak. Exact blend and production details for this 1978 bottling are not provided.

Food & Serving
Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Decant very carefully, if at all: an older Bordeaux may benefit from gentle separation from sediment, but extended aeration can cause a fragile wine to fade quickly. Pair with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, mushroom dishes or mature hard cheeses. Because of the noted low fill level, open shortly before serving and assess the wine gradually in the glass.

Producer
Founded in the eighteenth century, Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the landmark estates of Pauillac and a member of Bordeaux’s First Growth elite. It was elevated from Deuxième Cru to Premier Cru in the 1973 classification, a unique promotion that recognised the estate’s exceptional reputation. Mouton is also renowned for commissioning celebrated artists to design its vintage labels, making bottles such as this 1978 release significant both as mature wines and as pieces of Bordeaux history.
