Why shop with us?
Château Mouton Rothschild 1971 is a historic Bordeaux from one of Pauillac’s most celebrated estates. This mature red offers the appeal of a classified-growth vintage with considerable age, although the noted bad filling level means the bottle’s condition and drinking quality should be assessed with particular care.
Tasting Notes
At this stage, the wine may show a deep garnet colour with brick-red or amber tones at the rim. Mature aromas can include dried blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, leather, earthy nuances and subtle spice, while the palate may be savoury and softly textured, with fading fruit, resolved tannins and a lingering, tertiary finish. Given the bad filling level, oxidation is a significant possibility, and the wine may be more evolved—or less vibrant—than normally expected from a well-stored bottle of the same vintage. Its aging potential is limited; it is best approached as a mature bottle for immediate evaluation rather than further cellaring.
Production
Produced at Château Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac, Médoc, where gravelly soils provide excellent drainage and encourage deep-rooted vines. Mouton’s wines are traditionally based on Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by other permitted Bordeaux varieties, and are made through careful grape selection, fermentation and maturation in oak barrels. Specific details of the 1971 harvest and élevage are not available here, and the bottle’s fill level suggests that storage history should be taken into consideration.
Food & Serving
If sound, this mature Bordeaux can accompany roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, mushroom dishes or carefully aged hard cheeses. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Stand the bottle upright before opening, decant very gently only if necessary to remove sediment, and taste immediately after opening; with a low fill level, prolonged aeration may accelerate oxidation.
Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most renowned estates, located in Pauillac in the Médoc. It was elevated from Second Growth to Premier Cru Classé in the 1973 revision of the Bordeaux Classification, a rare recognition that reflects the estate’s exceptional reputation. Known for powerful, age-worthy wines and its distinctive artist-designed labels, Mouton remains one of the leading names in fine Bordeaux.
