Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1998 Mouton Rothschild shows a deep garnet-brick hue that hints at its maturity while still retaining vitality. The bouquet opens with crème de cassis, dried roses, hoisin, baking spice, dried cherries, mulberries, wood smoke, incense, and a forest-floor character that adds complexity and depth. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, rich and layered, with ripe fruit framed by firm, chewy tannins. The wine moves with an elegant, evolving texture and finishes with long, perfumed notes that linger beautifully. It is drinking well now, but still has excellent aging potential and should continue to cellar gracefully for 20–25 years or more, especially in magnum.

Production
Château Mouton Rothschild is located on the Plateau de Mouton in Pauillac, on the Médoc peninsula of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils, mixed with sand and clay, provide ideal drainage and help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve remarkable concentration and structure. The estate spans around 90 hectares and is planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot complementing the blend. Traditional vineyard work is carried out with great precision, and the grapes are harvested and vinified by a highly experienced team, with careful selection and blending tailored to the character of the vintage.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck breast, or truffle-infused dishes, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C and, for optimal expression, decant for about three hours before serving to allow the aromas and structure to fully open up. In magnum, the wine may show even greater elegance after extended aeration.
