Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep, concentrated ruby-garnet colour with impressive clarity. On the nose, it opens with lifted aromas of cassis, blackcurrant, framboise, roasted coffee, smoky oak, new leather and a subtle savoury note reminiscent of soy sauce, reflecting both richness and evolution. On the palate it is full-bodied, ripe and richly structured, with superb balance between dense fruit, firm tannins and well-integrated oak. The aromatics suggest a wine further along in development than the flavours imply, which is part of its charm: it remains energetic, layered and classical in shape. The 1996 vintage has excellent ageing potential and, in strong cellaring conditions, can continue to evolve gracefully for many years.

Production
Château Mouton Rothschild sits on the famous Plateau de Mouton in Pauillac, at the northern end of the Médoc, where deep gravel soils over sand and clay provide ideal drainage and heat retention. The vineyard is planted at high density and worked with great precision, with each parcel cared for individually to bring out the best character of the vintage. The final blend for 1996 is Cabernet Sauvignon-led, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, reflecting the estate’s traditional emphasis on structure, aromatic complexity and longevity.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for classic, flavourful dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, braised short ribs, venison or duck with dark sauces. Hard aged cheeses also work beautifully. Serve at around 16-18°C, and decant for 1-2 hours if opened now to allow the aromatics and structure to fully express themselves.

Château Mouton Rothschild was acquired by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853, but it was Baron Philippe de Rothschild who transformed the estate into one of the world’s most iconic names in wine. He pioneered estate bottling, modernised the château and introduced the tradition of commissioning artists for the label, creating a unique legacy that continues today. Promoted to Premier Cru Classé in 1973, Mouton Rothschild stands among the most admired estates in Bordeaux, with a reputation for excellence, collectability and cultural significance.
