Description

La Dame de Montrose is the distinguished second wine of Château Montrose, one of Saint-Estèphe’s most celebrated 2nd Growth estates. Crafted with the same care and precision as the Grand Vin, it offers a more approachable expression of the château’s power, finesse, and deep Left Bank heritage. This magnum selection brings together the 2012, 2014 and 2015 vintages in original wooden case, making it especially appealing for collectors and Bordeaux enthusiasts.

Tasting Notes
Expect a deep ruby to purple color with an inviting, polished sheen in the glass. Across the three vintages, the wines show a beautiful range of aromas: 2012 leans into black cherry, mocha and chocolate; 2014 is more restrained and refined with red cherry, bilberry and crushed violets; while 2015 adds floral lift, blueberry and a richer, more perfumed profile. On the palate, La Dame de Montrose is typically supple, structured and beautifully balanced, with ripe tannins and the freshness that gives Saint-Estèphe its hallmark precision. Merlot brings plushness and dark fruit, while Cabernet Sauvignon provides definition, length and age-worthy backbone. The 2012 is already generous and layered, the 2014 is linear and promising for further cellaring, and the 2015 is the most immediately seductive, with energy, texture and excellent drinkability. In magnum format, the wines will age gracefully for years, developing more complexity and harmony over time.

Production
The vineyards of Château Montrose sit on Saint-Estèphe’s classic gravel-and-clay soils, a terroir particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon thanks to its excellent drainage and water-retaining subsoil. The estate’s 95-hectare block surrounds the château in one continuous parcel, an unusual and historically rare setup that allows for careful parcel-by-parcel monitoring and precise vineyard management. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, followed by double sorting, gentle pressing, a 25-day temperature-controlled maceration, and maturation for around 12 months in about 30% new oak barrels. The blend for this cuvée is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot contributing freshness, perfume and spice.

Food & Serving
This is a wine made for classic, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game, and braised short ribs. It also works beautifully with mushroom dishes, truffle pasta, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C; if opening a younger vintage, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully. Older bottles can be decanted more gently just before serving.

Producer
Château Montrose is one of the benchmark estates of Saint-Estèphe and has long stood alongside Cos d’Estournel at the top of the appellation. Tracing its roots back to the late 18th century, when it was separated from Château Calon-Ségur, the estate earned its 2nd Growth classification in 1855 and has remained a reference point ever since. Today, it is admired for powerful, concentrated wines, a strong commitment to sustainable viticulture, and a level of consistency that has made it a favorite among critics and collectors worldwide.
