Description

Château Montrose 2010 is the flagship wine of one of Saint-Estèphe’s most celebrated estates, crafted through rigorous selection at every stage of production. Powerful yet beautifully refined, it combines the depth and structure of a great Grand Cru Classé with the elegance that only time in bottle can reveal. This is a rare and highly sought-after Bordeaux, and 2010 is widely regarded as one of Montrose’s greatest vintages.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, opaque black-blue colour that hints at its concentration and longevity. The bouquet is remarkably complex and polished, unfolding with blackberry and blueberry liqueur, alongside subtle notes of incense, licorice, and acacia flowers. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and intensely structured, with sweet, present tannins, remarkable purity, and impressive depth. Despite its power, it retains a refined, elegant balance, finishing with exceptional persistence. Château Montrose 2010 has outstanding aging potential and is a wine that can continue to evolve for decades, rewarding patient cellaring.

Production
Château Montrose is located in Saint-Estèphe, where its 95-hectare vineyard forms a single, continuous estate surrounding the château and its buildings. The terroir is ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, with warm gravel soils over clay subsoils that help retain water during dry periods and support slow, even ripening. For the 2010 vintage, the blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with strict parcel-by-parcel selection ensuring only the finest grapes make it into the grand vin. The wine is matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new, adding structure, spice, and subtle complexity without overwhelming the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a wine to serve with equally impressive food, such as roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck breast, or richly flavoured dishes with mushrooms and truffles. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant several hours in advance if drinking young; older bottles may need only gentle decanting to remove sediment.

Producer
Château Montrose traces its origins back to the late 18th century, when it was separated from Château Calon-Ségur, and it was later classified as a 2ème Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux classification. Along with Cos d’Estournel, it stands among the elite estates of Saint-Estèphe, admired for wines of power, concentration, and remarkable longevity. Montrose’s reputation has been built on consistency, precision, and a distinctive terroir that has remained largely unchanged since classification, helping secure its place among Bordeaux’s most revered names.
