Description
Château Montrose 1990 is widely regarded as one of the estate’s greatest and most celebrated vintages. A Second Growth in the 1855 Classification, Montrose is renowned for its powerful, structured Saint-Estèphe style; in this exceptional year, that characteristic depth is matched by remarkable maturity, harmony and finesse.
Tasting Notes
Now more than three decades old, the wine displays a deep garnet colour, often with brick-red hues at the rim. Its complex nose unfolds gradually, revealing layers of cassis, ripe dark berries, cedar, cigar box, tobacco, leather and forest floor, complemented by touches of spice, smoke and mineral nuances.
On the palate, Château Montrose 1990 is concentrated yet silky, with beautifully integrated tannins and an impressive balance between power and elegance. Dark fruit is joined by liquorice, cedar, earth and warm spice, leading to a remarkably long finish. Although mature, it retains vitality and structure, and should continue to evolve well when properly stored.
Production
The vineyards of Montrose lie on the gravelly slopes of Saint-Estèphe overlooking the Gironde estuary, where well-drained soils and the moderating influence of the river help produce deeply structured, age-worthy wines. The blend is based on Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Grapes are traditionally harvested at optimal ripeness and carefully selected before fermentation, followed by maturation in oak to develop complexity while preserving the wine’s distinctive dark-fruited character and firm structure.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C with classic, richly flavoured dishes such as roast beef, venison, lamb, beef tenderloin or slowly braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Given the wine’s age, stand the bottle upright before opening and decant carefully to separate any sediment; a gentle decant of around 30–60 minutes is generally preferable to prolonged aeration, while tasting as it opens in the glass.
Producer
Château Montrose is one of the most prestigious estates in Saint-Estèphe and has been classified as a Deuxième Cru Classé since the historic 1855 classification. Its vineyards and château occupy a celebrated site on the Gironde, and the estate has long been admired for producing wines of exceptional concentration, structure and longevity. The 1990 vintage is considered a benchmark for Montrose, combining the estate’s signature power with an unusually polished and mature expression, making it highly sought after by collectors and Bordeaux enthusiasts.
