Description
Château Mazeyres Pomerol 2020 is a polished, modern expression of Pomerol, bringing together Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot in a supple, refined red. It opens with bright notes of mint, wild berries and plum, framed by gentle spice and floral nuances. From a contrasting yet generous vintage, this is a biodynamically farmed Right Bank wine that combines depth, freshness and an immediately charming texture. Its unique appeal lies in the combination of Pomerol’s silky richness with the lift and aromatics of Cabernet Franc and the structure of Petit Verdot. The 2020 growing season was marked by a wet winter, a warm, almost tropical spring, a dry early summer and intense late-summer heat, resulting in low yields but perfectly ripe fruit. Rooted on a historic Pomerol plateau of sandy soils over clay, Château Mazeyres has long been part of the appellation’s story and has recently become a reference for sustainable, biodynamic viticulture in the area.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Château Mazeyres Pomerol 2020 shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with violet reflections, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is inviting and expressive: aromas of ripe red and black berries, juicy plum and black cherry are lifted by fresh mint, rose petals and subtle hints of sweet spice and cocoa.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, generous and fleshy, with a core of ripe, dark fruit wrapped in velvety tannins. The juicy, lively acidity keeps everything fresh and precise, balancing the wine’s richness and lending it real drinkability. Notes of plum, blackcurrant and raspberry mingle with delicate herbal and floral tones and a gentle whisper of spice on the finish. The aftertaste is long, smooth and charming, already very approachable. Enjoyable now with a short decant, it has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and softer contours with time in bottle.
Production
Château Mazeyres is situated in Libourne on a well-exposed plateau of predominantly sandy topsoils over a clay-rich subsoil, a classic Pomerol terroir that lends both elegance and depth to the wines. The estate has embraced biodynamic viticulture since 2012 and achieved full certification in 2018, working closely with nature to enhance soil life, vine health and terroir expression. Grapes are harvested relatively early to capture freshness and optimal ripeness, with careful parcel-by-parcel picking to respect differences in variety and site. In the cellar, the fruit is handled gently, with controlled fermentations that preserve aromatic purity and fine tannin texture, followed by maturation in carefully selected vessels (including French oak) to refine structure without overwhelming the natural character of the wine.
Food & Serving
This Pomerol is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roast lamb, veal chops, duck breast, beef tenderloin, and richer poultry dishes like roasted chicken with herbs or guinea fowl. It also works well with mushroom risotto, truffle dishes, lentil stews, and semi-hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatics and silky texture. A decant of 45–60 minutes when young will help the wine unfurl its minty, floral and spicy nuances and soften the tannins further, especially if you are enjoying it within the first few years after release.
Producer
Château Mazeyres lies in Libourne, just west of Bordeaux, on 25.5 hectares of well-situated vineyards in the heart of Pomerol. The estate’s vines occupy a gently elevated plateau with sandy soils over clay, a combination that has long been prized for producing wines of both finesse and depth. In recent years, Château Mazeyres has become one of the appellation’s leading voices for biodynamic farming, officially certified since 2018 after many years of conversion. This commitment to sensitive, environmentally conscious viticulture has helped the château craft increasingly precise, terroir-driven wines, reinforcing its reputation as a significant and forward-thinking producer in the Pomerol landscape.
