Description

Château Margaux 2021 is a classically styled Left Bank grand vin that combines precision, purity and finesse in a cooler, more delicate vintage. Crafted predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon, it captures the essence of this legendary First Growth estate in a wine that is both immediately captivating and built for long-term cellaring. Expect a beautifully sculpted Margaux with superb balance rather than sheer power.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Château Margaux 2021 shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with a luminous edge, hinting at both concentration and finesse. The nose opens gradually, revealing layered aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry and fresh raspberry, interwoven with notes of licorice, white flowers, graphite and a touch of charcoal. With air, more nuance appears: subtle cedar, fine spice and a delicate floral lift. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, precise and deep, with a broad yet refined attack. The fruit is beautifully pure and vivid, carried by a lively line of acidity that keeps everything focused and energetic. Silky yet firm, sweet-toned tannins structure the mid-palate, giving a sense of tension and drive rather than heaviness. The finish is long, penetrating and persistent, echoing dark berries, floral notes and a gentle mineral touch. While already harmonious, this 2021 has clear aging potential; it should evolve gracefully over 15–25 years, gaining complexity and texture with time in bottle.

Production
Château Margaux 2021 is produced from estate-grown fruit in the heart of the Margaux appellation on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where deep gravel soils over limestone and clay provide ideal drainage and naturally low vigor, perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The final blend is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, sourced from meticulously tended parcels and picked relatively late to achieve optimal ripeness in this cooler vintage. Severe selection and a significant use of saignée (juice run-off) helped intensify concentration and purity. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled vats, parcel by parcel, followed by traditional élevage in a high proportion of new French oak barriques, with the wine aging on fine lees until bottling in July. This careful, classical approach preserves the aromatic refinement and structural elegance that define Château Margaux.

Food & Serving
Château Margaux 2021 pairs beautifully with refined, subtly prepared dishes that allow its elegance to shine. Think roasted lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, veal tenderloin, pigeon or duck breast, as well as earthy dishes featuring truffle, wild mushrooms or root vegetables. It also works well with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the wine’s aromatic detail and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to open and the tannins to soften; with more bottle age, a gentle, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment will suffice.

Producer
Château Margaux is one of Bordeaux’s most revered First Growth estates, with a history dating back to the 16th century and formal classification as a Premier Cru in the landmark 1855 Classification. Situated in the Margaux appellation on the Left Bank, it has long been celebrated for producing some of the most perfumed and refined Cabernet-based wines in the world. Under the stewardship of the Mentzelopoulos family since the late 1970s, the château has undergone extensive investment in both vineyard and cellar, consolidating its position at the very top of Bordeaux. Renowned for its consistent quality, precision and age-worthiness, Château Margaux remains a benchmark for elegance and complexity in the Médoc.
