Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Léoville-Poyferré shows a deep, vibrant purple-ruby hue, signalling concentration and freshness rather than heaviness. The nose is refined and expressive, led by pure cassis and blackcurrant, violet florals, and wild blueberries, layered with notes of cedar, spicy oak, graphite, and a touch of tobacco and truffle as it opens in the glass. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with impressive richness for the vintage, yet it remains impeccably balanced. The dark berry core is framed by ripe, finely grained tannins and a lively, mouthwatering acidity that carries notes of blackberries, plum, baking spices, and delicate cigar box. Subtle earthy undertones and hints of cocoa and truffle emerge on the long, structured finish. While approachable with extended aeration in its youth, this 2021 is built to evolve gracefully over 20–25 years, gaining complexity and silkiness with a decade or more in the cellar.

Production
Sourced from Léoville-Poyferré’s impressive 80 hectares in the western part of Saint-Julien, the vines are rooted in the classic Médoc terroir of deep gravel with clay and sand, which provides excellent drainage and encourages Cabernet Sauvignon to reach optimal ripeness. The estate practices meticulous vineyard management, with careful canopy work and hand-harvesting parcel by parcel to ensure only perfectly ripe berries are selected. In the cellar, the blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc is vinified in temperature-controlled vats, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a significant portion new) to build structure, integrate tannins, and add layers of spice and complexity, all while preserving the purity of fruit that defines the 2021 vintage.

This Saint-Julien is a natural companion to classic dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, entrecôte with herb butter, beef Wellington, or braised veal and short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffled poultry, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Young bottles (under 10 years) benefit greatly from 2–4 hours of decanting to soften the tannins and allow the aromatics to unfurl; older bottles should be decanted gently only to remove sediment and then served soon after.

Château Léoville-Poyferré is one of the great names of Saint-Julien, situated about 45 km northwest of Bordeaux in the very heart of the Médoc. Once part of one of the largest estates in the region during the French Revolution, it was officially classified as a 2ème Grand Cru Classé in the landmark 1855 classification. The Cuvelier family acquired the property in 1920 and has since elevated it into the top tier of Left Bank estates, with a modern era marked by constant investment and quality improvements. Today, under the direction of Sara Lecompte Cuvelier and a skilled team including cellar master Didier Thomann, vineyard manager Bruno Clenet, and oenologist Isabelle Davin, Léoville-Poyferré is renowned for its opulent yet precise style, consistently producing some of the most sought-after wines of Saint-Julien, including this grand vin and the second wine, Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré.
