Description
Château Léoville Poyferré Saint-Julien 2018 is a powerful yet polished second growth from the heart of the Médoc, crafted in one of Bordeaux’s most acclaimed modern vintages. This is the estate’s grand vin, a benchmark Saint-Julien that marries dark, velvety fruit with structure, energy and finesse. Classified as 2ème Grand Cru Classé in 1855 and with roots dating back to 1638, Léoville Poyferré today stands among the most sought-after wines of the Left Bank, especially in ripe, concentrated vintages like 2018.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Léoville Poyferré is deep, almost opaque garnet-purple with a vibrant rim hinting at its youth and intensity. The nose is layered and expressive, opening with ripe blackcurrant, black cherry and blueberry, followed by notes of violets, graphite, cedar, exotic spice and a touch of truffle and tobacco leaf as it unfolds in the glass.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated yet remarkably refined, with a core of lush, dark fruit framed by firm, polished tannins. Flavours of cassis, blackberry and plum are interwoven with cocoa, licorice, sweet tobacco, cloves and a subtle savoury earthiness typical of top Saint-Julien. The texture is sensuous and mouth-coating, balanced by fresh acidity that keeps everything long and precise. While it can be approached young after extended decanting, this 2018 is built for the long haul, with an optimal drinking window beginning around 10–15 years from vintage and the ability, in good cellaring conditions, to evolve gracefully for 20–30+ years.
Production
Léoville Poyferré’s 80 hectares sit on the classic gravelly terraces of Saint-Julien, about 45 km northwest of Bordeaux, where deep layers of Garonne gravel over clay and sand provide perfect drainage and encourage Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen slowly and fully. The vineyards are planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, all contributing complexity and balance to the final blend. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, typically by hand, with rigorous sorting to ensure only pristine fruit makes it into the grand vin. Vinification combines temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel or concrete vats with careful extraction to preserve fruit purity and fine tannin structure. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) for an extended period, allowing the aromas, tannins and texture to integrate and giving the wine its signature depth, polish and capacity to age.
Food & Serving
This 2018 Saint-Julien is a natural partner for classic, richly flavoured dishes: think roast or grilled lamb with rosemary, entrecôte steak, beef Wellington, venison, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle dishes, wild mushroom ragout, and mature hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. If enjoyed in its youth (within the first 5–10 years), decant for 2–4 hours to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to open fully; older bottles should be decanted gently only to remove sediment and served relatively soon after.
Producer
Château Léoville Poyferré’s history stretches back to 1638, and by the time of the French Revolution it was the largest estate in Saint-Julien. Recognised as a 2ème Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Classification, the property has long been considered one of the standard-bearers of the appellation. In 1920, the Cuvelier family acquired the château and has since guided it through a steady rise in quality and reputation. Today, under the leadership of Sara Lecompte Cuvelier, supported by Cellar Master Didier Thomann, Vineyard Manager Bruno Clenet and oenologist Isabelle Davin, Léoville Poyferré is widely regarded as one of the stars of the Left Bank, consistently producing wines that combine power, precision and seductive texture. Alongside the grand vin, the estate also produces the second wine Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré in partnership with Château Moulin Riche, further showcasing the depth and character of its exceptional terroir.
