Description

Château Léoville Poyferré Expression des Terroirs is a compelling six-bottle selection that showcases the character and depth of one of Saint-Julien’s most respected estates, alongside its carefully crafted partner wines. Bringing together Château Léoville Poyferré, Château Moulin Riche and Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré, this set offers a vivid portrait of the Cuvelier family’s winemaking style across several vintages.

Tasting Notes
Across the box, the wines tend to show deep garnet to opaque purple colour, with aromas that range from blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry to graphite, crushed stone, earth and subtle hints of vanilla or savory spice. The palate is typically rich and structured, with silky to grainy tannins, concentrated dark fruit and a long, mineral-tinged finish. The 2011 is broad, dense and notably rich for the vintage, while the 2012 is more extracted and muscular, built for patience and long development. The Moulin Riche wines bring a more supple, opulent expression, and the Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré bottlings offer freshness, firm structure and excellent vibrancy. Several of the wines have strong aging potential, with the top cuvées capable of evolving beautifully for 15–25 years or more.

Production
Sourced from the storied terroirs of Saint-Julien in Bordeaux’s Left Bank, the wines in this collection are shaped by gravelly soils that naturally favour Cabernet Sauvignon and support excellent drainage and ripening. The blends also include Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, adding softness, aromatic complexity and structure. Vinification follows a traditional Bordeaux approach with careful extraction and élevage in oak, with the various cuvées reflecting different selections from the estate’s vineyards and cellar programme.

Food & Serving
These wines pair beautifully with classic Bordeaux fare such as roast lamb, ribeye steak, duck breast, game, and slow-braised beef dishes, as well as mushroom risotto or aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting the more structured vintages, especially the 2012, for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young. Older bottles should be handled more gently, with a brief decant if needed to remove sediment.

Producer
Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the great names of Saint-Julien and has been part of the Cuvelier family since 1920. Over the past few decades, the estate has earned a reputation for consistent quality, richness and precision, becoming one of the leading properties in the Médoc. Its wines are regularly praised by critics and collectors alike for their power, polish and impressive ability to age.
