Description
Château Léoville Poyferré 1990 is a beautifully mature Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s most respected estates, offering warmth, charm, and plenty of old-school character. In this impressive 300cl format, the wine has retained exceptional depth and presence, making it a remarkable bottle for collectors and special occasions alike.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep plum-garnet colour with clear signs of graceful maturity. On the nose, it opens with smoky notes of charcoal and embers, lifted by crème de cassis, flowers, mint, and dark melted chocolate, with a little air bringing even more complexity. On the palate it is medium-bodied but strikingly generous, with soft, resolved tannins and a rich, almost plush texture. It is full, round, and sensual, with the warmth of the 1990 vintage giving it a slightly rustic edge that adds to its appeal rather than taking away from it. At peak maturity now, though large-format bottles may continue to evolve beautifully for some time.
Production
Made from the classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, this Saint-Julien comes from gravelly Left Bank terroir that naturally favours structure, ripeness, and aromatic complexity. The 1990 vintage, marked by a warm growing season, produced fruit with generous concentration and supple tannins, and the wine was vinified in the traditional Bordeaux style to preserve balance, depth, and age-worthiness.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roasted lamb, beef fillet, duck, game, or mushroom-rich dishes such as truffle risotto or wild mushroom tart. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting gently for 30–60 minutes if the bottle is showing youthful restraint, though mature bottles like this can also be enjoyed with minimal aeration.
Producer
Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the historic estates of Saint-Julien, with origins dating back to the Léoville estate that once ranked among the great Bordeaux properties of the 18th century. Now recognised as a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification, the château is admired for producing wines that combine Left Bank structure with generous fruit and polish, and it has earned a strong reputation among collectors for its consistency and ageing potential.
