Description

Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the most celebrated wines of Bordeaux, often spoken of as the finest Second Growth in the 1855 Classification. Sourced from prized vineyards in the northern edge of Saint-Julien, right beside Château Latour in Pauillac, it is known for its remarkable depth, structure, and extraordinary aging capacity.

Tasting Notes
The 1988 Magnum shows the kind of classic, cellar-worthy profile that has made Léoville Las Cases legendary. Expect a deep, mature color with notes of cassis, cigar wrapper, and earthy, sweet soil tones on the nose, followed by a seamless, velvety palate with impressive length and penetration. According to Robert Parker, the wine has moved beyond youthful austerity and now offers real charm and plenitude, with a medium- to full-bodied frame that feels both powerful and refined. This is a wine with outstanding aging potential, and in Magnum format it should continue to evolve gracefully for many years to come.

Production
Léoville Las Cases comes from the historic estate in the northernmost part of Saint-Julien, where vineyard parcels in the famed l'Enclos sit on the border with Pauillac and benefit from an exceptional terroir. The vines are planted on gravelly soils near Château Latour, with many parcels of mature vines aged around 50 to 80 years, contributing to the wine’s concentration and complexity. Harvesting is carried out with a focus on selecting the best fruit from these prime sites, followed by vinification aimed at preserving structure, purity, and the estate’s signature depth.

Food & Serving
This is a magnificent wine for refined dishes such as grilled ribeye, roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or game served with earthy accompaniments like mushrooms or truffle. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant well in advance if the bottle is opened now, especially given its age and the Magnum format, to allow the wine to fully раскрыть its bouquet and texture.

Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the oldest and most respected estates in the Médoc, with roots tracing back to the historic Domaine de Léoville before its division in the 19th century. Now part of the Delon family holdings, alongside Château Nénin and Château Potensac, the estate has built a global reputation for producing wines of exceptional consistency and first-growth caliber. Under the stewardship of figures such as Michel Delon, it has become a benchmark for powerful yet elegant Saint-Julien wine.
