Description

Château Léoville Las Cases 1983 is a classic Saint-Julien that showcases why this estate is so often spoken of in the same breath as Bordeaux’s first growths. From one of the Médoc’s most revered vineyard sites, this vintage offers the structure, depth, and longevity that have made Léoville Las Cases legendary among collectors.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a healthy deep ruby-to-purple hue, still remarkably youthful for its age. The nose is refined and intensely aromatic, with notes of lead pencil, blackcurrant, and spicy oak, unfolding with the kind of precision that defines the château’s style. On the palate, the wine is medium- to full-bodied, beautifully delineated, and impressively elegant despite its richness and authority. There is a velvety depth to the fruit, balanced by a firm, age-worthy backbone, and the finish lingers with remarkable persistence. This is a wine with exceptional aging potential, and even now it continues to suggest that it can evolve gracefully for years to come.

Production
Château Léoville Las Cases is located in the northern part of Saint-Julien, bordering Pauillac and sitting close to Château Latour—an enviable terroir that helps explain the wine’s power and longevity. The estate’s best parcels come from the famed l’Enclos, planted with old vines, many between 50 and 80 years of age, on gravelly soils that favor Cabernet-driven wines with concentration and structure. The 1983 vintage was vinified with the estate’s traditional focus on precision and long-lived balance, resulting in a wine built for extended cellar aging rather than early drinking.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with refined, flavorful dishes such as roast lamb, beef fillet, ribeye, game, or slow-braised beef with herbs and mushrooms. Mature hard cheeses also work well. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant carefully if needed; for an older bottle like this, a gentle decant shortly before serving is recommended to preserve its delicate aromas.

Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates in the Médoc, with a reputation for producing wines of extraordinary consistency and First Growth-level quality. Once part of the historic Domaine de Léoville, the estate has remained in family hands through the Delon family, who have played a major role in shaping its modern reputation. Under the guidance of figures such as Michel Delon and today Jean-Hubert Delon and Genevieve d'Alton, the château has become one of Bordeaux’s most respected names, admired for both longevity and precision.
