Description

Château Le Puy Barthélemy 2019 is a characterful Bordeaux red that marries depth, finesse and drinkability in one beautifully crafted bottle. A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it is aged 24 months in barrique, developing a perfumed, vinous bouquet and a remarkably silky, yet profound, structure. Long regarded as one of the most distinctive estates on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, Château Le Puy is celebrated for its traditional, low‑intervention approach that lets terroir shine through in every vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Barthélemy 2019 shows a deep violet to garnet core with a luminous rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries and crushed plums, wrapped in notes of violets, graphite, tobacco leaf and subtle cocoa. With air, savoury undertones of leather, forest floor and a gentle spice from the barrique emerge, adding layers of complexity. On the palate, this is a poised, medium to full‑bodied wine with a velvety texture and a long, flowing structure. Juicy black and red fruits are framed by fine, ripe tannins and a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine agile rather than heavy. Flavours of ripe cassis, plum and black cherry mingle with cigar box, cedar, dried herbs and a hint of truffle. The finish is long, elegant and mouth‑coating, with lingering notes of dark fruit and spice. While already approachable with some aeration, Barthélemy 2019 has excellent aging potential; it will evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining more tertiary complexity and integration.

Production
Château Le Puy lies on the limestone and clay plateau of Francs Côtes de Bordeaux, where deep-rooted vines draw character from stony, mineral-rich soils and a relatively elevated position. The estate is renowned for its organic and biodynamic practices, with meticulous work in the vineyards, low yields and hand harvesting to ensure that only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it to the cellar. After careful sorting, the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are vinified traditionally with native yeasts, followed by a long maturation of about 24 months in barriques. The wine is handled gently, typically with minimal or no fining and filtration, and very limited use of sulphur, resulting in a pure, expressive Bordeaux that faithfully reflects its terroir.

Food & Serving
Barthélemy 2019 is a superb partner for grilled or roasted red meats, such as ribeye steak, lamb chops or entrecôte, as well as game dishes like venison, wild boar or duck. Its earthy, savory nuances also make it an excellent match for mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, roasted root vegetables and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. Decant for 1–2 hours if drinking now to allow the wine to open and soften; with additional bottle age, a shorter decant or a gentle splash in a carafe will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Le Puy is a historic family estate located on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, in the appellation Francs Côtes de Bordeaux, with viticultural roots dating back several centuries. Often referred to as the “other Puy” of Bordeaux, it has built a cult following among wine lovers for its uncompromising, traditional methods and its early embrace of organic and biodynamic farming. The estate focuses on producing wines that are naturally balanced, terroir-driven and made with minimal intervention, frequently eschewing modern technological shortcuts. Over the years, Château Le Puy has become a benchmark producer in its region, admired for its consistency, authenticity and the age‑worthy elegance of cuvées like Barthélemy.
