Description

Chateau Lamourette Sauternes 2016 is a classic sweet wine from the heart of Bordeaux’s most famous dessert wine appellation. Crafted in small quantities, it offers the luxurious richness and aromatic complexity that define great Sauternes, yet remains approachable and food‑friendly. This cuvée showcases the region’s hallmark botrytised grapes, combining tradition and meticulous vineyard work to deliver an elegant, ageworthy dessert wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Sauternes shows a deep golden hue with luminous amber highlights, hinting at both concentration and developing complexity. The nose is intense and layered, with notes of acacia honey, candied apricot, ripe peach, and marmalade, supported by touches of vanilla, crème brûlée, and a subtle nuttiness. Hints of saffron, dried flowers and citrus zest add freshness and lift. On the palate, the wine is rich and silky, with a generous sweetness that’s beautifully balanced by vibrant acidity. Flavours of dried apricot, pineapple confit, orange peel, and honeycomb unfold gradually, joined by nuances of almond, spice and a gentle toastiness from barrel aging. The finish is long, smooth, and mouth‑coating, leaving lingering notes of citrus, honey and dried stone fruit. Enjoyable now for its youthful energy and purity of fruit, it has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully in bottle for at least 10–20 years, gaining deeper caramel, nut and spice complexity over time.

Production
Chateau Lamourette draws its fruit from vineyards planted on the classic Sauternes mix of gravelly, clay and limestone soils overlooking the Garonne, an environment that encourages the morning mists and warm afternoons essential for noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). The grapes—primarily Sémillon with a supporting share of Sauvignon Blanc and a touch of Muscadelle—are harvested by hand in multiple passes through the vineyard, with pickers selecting only botrytised berries at optimum ripeness. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented slowly at controlled temperatures, often in oak barrels, to preserve delicate aromatics while building texture. The wine is then aged in French oak—typically for 12–18 months—with a portion of new wood, allowing flavours to integrate and the hallmark Sauternes richness and complexity to develop.

Food & Serving
This Sauternes is a natural partner for blue cheeses such as Roquefort or Stilton, as well as rich foie gras terrine served with toasted brioche or brioche-style bread. It also shines alongside classic dessert pairings like tarte Tatin, crème brûlée, almond tarts, or simple poached stone fruits and citrus desserts. For something more adventurous, try it with spicy Asian dishes or salty charcuterie, where the sweetness beautifully offsets heat and salt. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C; too cold and the aromatics will be muted, too warm and the sweetness dominates. Decanting is optional but a short time in the glass helps the wine open up, especially if it has a few years of age.

Producer
Chateau Lamourette is a small, quality‑driven estate in the Sauternes appellation, within Bordeaux, dedicated to expressing the classic character of this world‑renowned sweet wine region. Like many traditional Sauternes properties, it focuses almost exclusively on the painstaking production of botrytised dessert wines, where hand selection and low yields are key to concentration and purity. Over the years, Chateau Lamourette has earned a quiet reputation among informed wine lovers for offering authentic, carefully crafted Sauternes that deliver the style and complexity of the appellation at a particularly compelling value. Its wines are often appreciated for their balance—combining generous sweetness with freshness—and for their ability to age gracefully while remaining accessible in their youth.
