Château Lafite Rothschild 2001

Château Lafite Rothschild 2001 is a classic Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates. A First Growth since the historic 1855 classification, Lafite is renowned for combining remarkable elegance with depth, longevity and extraordinary finesse. The 2001 vintage offers a more approachable expression of the château’s signature style, with concentrated fruit, refined tannins and impressive complexity.

Tasting Notes
Deep, saturated plum with purple highlights introduces a sophisticated and beautifully composed wine. The nose reveals classic Pauillac character, combining lead pencil and cedar with ripe red and black currants, plum and subtle liqueur-like nuances. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet concentrated, with rich fruit, lively definition and sweet, polished tannins. Its elegance and balance are complemented by a long, refined finish. While the 2001 is more evolved than some of Lafite’s more powerful recent vintages, it should continue to develop gracefully for several years when carefully stored, offering increasing tertiary complexity.

Production
The vineyards lie in Pauillac in the northern Médoc, where gravel-rich soils provide excellent drainage and retain heat, helping Cabernet Sauvignon ripen with precision and structure. The 2001 Grand Vin is a blend of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13.5% Merlot. Lafite follows a traditional, highly meticulous approach, including strict yield control, extensive manual work and hand harvesting. Chemical fertilisers are used sparingly or not at all, while carefully managed organic fertilisation supports the health and longevity of the vines. The grapes are sourced from vines averaging around 45 years of age, with some exceptionally old parcels, including La Gravière, planted in 1886.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to rest upright. Decanting for around 1–2 hours is recommended to help open the wine and separate any sediment, although older bottles should be handled gently and tasted periodically during decanting. Its refined structure pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck, wild mushrooms and mature hard cheeses.

Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild’s history reaches back to 1234, while the estate’s vineyards were substantially developed by Jacques de Ségur in the seventeenth century. In the early eighteenth century, Nicolas-Alexandre Marquis de Ségur presented Lafite’s wines to the French and European aristocracy, earning them the reputation of being the “King’s wine.” The château became one of only four estates awarded Premier Cru status in the 1855 Classification. It has been owned by the Rothschild family since 1868; today, Saskia de Rothschild represents the sixth generation of the family at the estate. Lafite remains one of Bordeaux’s most influential and sought-after producers, celebrated for its precision, longevity and exceptionally elegant interpretation of Pauillac.
