Description

Château Lafite Rothschild 1994 is a classic Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most legendary estates, offering the refinement and pedigree that have made Lafite a benchmark for generations. As a Premier Cru Classé since 1855, it carries extraordinary historical significance and a reputation for elegance over force.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine typically shows a deep ruby core with an evolved garnet rim, reflecting its age gracefully. The bouquet is subtle and layered, with aromas of cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite, blackcurrant, and dried floral notes, unfolding slowly rather than loudly. On the palate, it is poised and structured, with firm tannins, lifted acidity, and a classically restrained Pauillac profile. Rather than showing abundant weight, it emphasizes purity, precision, and length, with a savoury, mineral finish. This is a wine that rewards patience and has the capacity to continue evolving for many years in a well-kept cellar.

Production
Château Lafite Rothschild is located in Pauillac in the northern Médoc, where gravel-rich soils and a cool maritime climate encourage the Cabernet Sauvignon-driven style for which the estate is known. The property follows traditional practices with strict yield control, manual harvesting, and careful vineyard work throughout the year, while avoiding or minimizing chemical fertilisers in favour of organic approaches. Although the provided information highlights Cabernet Franc, Lafite’s grand vin is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot used in smaller proportions depending on the vintage. The estate relies on fruit from mature vines, with careful selection to preserve finesse and structure in the finished wine.

Food & Serving
This vintage pairs beautifully with fine roasted lamb, duck breast, beef tenderloin, game dishes, and mushroom-based cuisine, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for one to two hours if the wine is still showing tightly, though older bottles should be handled more gently and tasted before extended aeration.

Producer
Founded in the 13th century and later developed by the Ségur family, Château Lafite Rothschild became one of the four original Premier Cru estates in the 1855 classification, securing its place among the most celebrated wines in the world. Under the Rothschild family, the estate has continued to uphold its reputation for precision, longevity, and elegance, with Éric de Rothschild and now Saskia de Rothschild helping guide the property into its modern era. Its long history and consistent excellence have made it a symbol of Bordeaux prestige.
