Description

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the world’s most iconic fine wines, long regarded as a benchmark for elegance, restraint, and remarkable longevity. Classified as a Premier Cru in the 1855 Bordeaux classification, it has been synonymous with prestige since the 19th century, while the 1959 vintage is widely celebrated as one of the estate’s greatest achievements.

Tasting Notes
Deep garnet in appearance with the graceful maturity expected of a legendary old Bordeaux, the wine offers a profoundly expressive bouquet of flowers, black truffle, cedar, lead pencil, and ripe red fruit. On the palate it is rich, velvety, and concentrated, yet beautifully poised, with a medium-to-full-bodied structure and a purity that keeps the finish long and refined. The 1959 has reached a superb stage of development, showing all the complexity that comes with age while still retaining vitality and depth. It is a wine for contemplative drinking now, though its structure and pedigree suggest it can continue to evolve gracefully for many years.

Production
Château Lafite Rothschild is based in Pauillac in Bordeaux’s Médoc region, where gravelly soils and a classic Atlantic-influenced climate help shape the estate’s refined, ageworthy style. The vineyards are farmed with meticulous care, using manual harvesting, strict yield control, and a largely traditional approach that minimizes chemical intervention and supports old-vine expression. Vinification follows a careful, precision-led process designed to preserve aromatic detail, structure, and the distinctive Lafite sense of finesse.

Food & Serving
Best enjoyed with dishes that complement its delicate power and earthy complexity, such as roast lamb, beef fillet, game, duck, or truffle-based preparations. Serve at around 16–18°C and, for an old vintage like 1959, decant gently only if needed to remove sediment, ideally shortly before serving to protect the wine’s mature aromatics.

Producer
Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the great names of Bordeaux, with a history dating back to the 13th century and a legacy built in the hands of the Ségur and Rothschild families. Its reputation was cemented by its inclusion among the four Premier Crus in 1855, and it has remained one of the most admired estates in the Médoc ever since. Under the leadership of Éric de Rothschild and later Saskia de Rothschild, the estate continues to be recognized for its consistency, refinement, and global prestige.
