Description
Château Haut-Brion 1989 is one of Bordeaux’s legendary wines: a profound, seamless Pessac-Léognan red from one of the region’s most historic estates. Renowned for its depth, symmetry, and extraordinary longevity, this vintage has long been celebrated as a benchmark for great mature Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby-purple core with impressive concentration and clarity. The nose is layered and remarkably complex, opening with scorched earth, graphite, liquid minerals, blackberry, blackcurrant jam, toast, licorice, and warm spice.
On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, and velvety, with a dense, almost viscous texture that still feels youthful despite its age. The wine’s hallmark is its balance: powerful fruit, superb purity, and a long, seamless finish. It has immense aging potential, and even now remains one of those rare wines that can continue to evolve beautifully for years.
Production
Château Haut-Brion is situated in Pessac, just outside Bordeaux, on a distinctive terroir known for gravelly soils that lend elegance, minerality, and aromatic complexity to the wines. The estate’s vineyards are planted to classic Bordeaux varieties, with Cabernet Franc playing a key role in the blend, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, destemmed, and fermented with temperature control to preserve purity and concentration. The best lots are then matured in new oak barrels for 20 to 24 months, allowing the wine to develop structure, nuance, and its famously polished character.
Food & Serving
This is a wine for equally refined cuisine: roasted lamb, beef Wellington, venison, duck breast, truffle dishes, or mature hard cheeses all make excellent companions. Serve at around 16–18°C, and if opening now, decant gently for an hour or more to let the bouquet unfold fully and to soften the wine’s mature structure.
Producer
Château Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s most historic and influential estates, and the first château in the region to bottle wine under its own name. Its roots trace back to the 16th century, and its reputation was already reaching beyond France by the 17th century. Under the modern stewardship of the Dillon family since 1935, the estate has been restored to global prominence and remains one of the most admired First Growths, known for consistency, longevity, and world-class wines across great vintages.
