Description
Château Haut-Brion 1982 is one of Bordeaux’s great First Growths, a wine that combines historic prestige with remarkable finesse and longevity. Produced in Pessac, just outside the city of Bordeaux, it stands as the first wine in Bordeaux to be sold under the château’s name and remains one of the most sought-after expressions of the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Haut-Brion 1982 typically shows a mature, graceful ruby-brick hue. The bouquet is layered and complex, with earthy gravel, dried autumn leaves, bay leaf, black olive, and subtle dark fruit still lingering beneath the savory development.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied and beautifully composed, with fine, polished tannins and a supple texture that reflects the elegance of the vintage. Rather than power alone, it offers charm, depth, and an evolving, nuanced finish. Bottles of strong provenance can continue to age with confidence, retaining their character for many years.
Production
The wine comes from the gravelly terroir of Pessac-Léognan, where Château Haut-Brion’s vineyards benefit from warm, well-drained soils that suit Cabernet Franc and the estate’s other classic Bordeaux varieties. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and destemmed before fermentation. The best lots are then aged in new oak barrels for around 20 to 24 months, allowing the wine to develop complexity, structure, and a refined, cellar-worthy profile.
Food & Serving
This is a wine best enjoyed with refined dishes such as roast lamb, duck breast, game, beef fillet, or truffle-infused cuisine. It also pairs wonderfully with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting older bottles gently for sediment, while younger or well-preserved bottles can benefit from several hours of air to reveal their full aromatic range.
Producer
Château Haut-Brion has a history stretching back to the 16th century, when Jean de Pontac received the original vineyard lands through marriage. It became the first Bordeaux estate to build its reputation under its own name and later gained legendary status as one of the First Growths in the 1855 Classification. Since 1935, under the Dillon family and now Prince Robert of Luxembourg, the château has continued to uphold its reputation for consistency, longevity, and world-class quality.
