Description

Château Gruaud Larose 2019 is a beautifully composed Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s most historic second growth estates. Built on a classic left-bank blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines depth, elegance and impressive structure with the charm and polish that have long made Gruaud Larose a benchmark for the appellation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a dark, concentrated core with a brilliant sheen and the kind of color that hints at serious ageing potential. The bouquet is refined and layered, with wild berries, plum, blackcurrant, licorice, pencil shavings, subtle earth and a touch of cedar and spice from élevage. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, seamless and beautifully balanced, with ripe yet powdery tannins and a fresh, succulent line of acidity. There is real breadth and power here, but it never feels heavy; instead, it finishes with length, finesse and a distinctly Saint-Julien sense of harmony. This is a wine built for the cellar and should continue to develop gracefully for decades.

Production
The grapes come from Gruaud Larose’s south-facing parcels in Saint-Julien, on gravelly and clay-rich soils that give the wine both structure and generosity. Many of the vines are mature, with an average age of more than 46 years and some over 80, contributing to concentration and complexity. The estate has been moving toward organic farming since 2019 and also uses biodynamic practices, including herbal teas and trace-mineral preparations in the vineyard. The wine is vinified with a careful approach to preserve purity and balance, and it sees a high proportion of new oak, integrated here with confidence rather than dominance.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef fillet, duck breast, venison, or slow-braised short ribs, as well as mushroom-rich dishes and hard, aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine’s aromatics and texture to fully open up.

Producer
Château Gruaud Larose dates back to 1725 and is one of Saint-Julien’s most storied estates, classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Today it is owned by Jacques Merlaut’s Taillan group, which also oversees several well-known Bordeaux properties, and the estate is widely respected for its strong identity, long ageing potential and renewed focus on sustainable viticulture. Over the centuries, Gruaud Larose has built a reputation as one of the classic names of the Médoc, prized by collectors around the world.
