Description
Chateau Gruaud Larose 2018 is a classic Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé with the kind of depth, structure and cellaring potential that has made this historic estate a favourite among collectors. Built on the gravelly slopes of Bordeaux’s left bank and crafted from old vines, it combines impressive concentration with refined balance. Since 1725, Gruaud Larose has been known for wines of stature, and this vintage continues that tradition with remarkable confidence.
Tasting Notes
Deep garnet-purple in the glass, the 2018 opens with a rich and expressive nose of black cherries, mulberries, plum compote and blackcurrant, layered with menthol, violet, liquorice, cloves, fallen leaves and earthy notes. It is bold and polished, with a clear sense of place and a very classic Saint-Julien profile.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with dense, muscular fruit at the core, supported by firm, grainy tannins and bright freshness that keeps everything in balance. The finish is long, spicy and persistent. This is a wine built for patience, and it should evolve beautifully over the next 15–25 years, gaining even more complexity with time in the cellar.
Production
The vineyard lies in the southern part of Saint-Julien, on the top of the plateau where south-facing gravel soils provide excellent drainage and ideal ripening conditions. The vines are notably mature, averaging over 46 years of age, with some parcels more than 80 years old, helping to give the wine its concentration and depth. Harvesting is carried out with careful selection, and the estate has been moving toward organic farming since 2019, supported by biodynamic practices such as herbal teas and trace mineral treatments.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef Wellington, braised short ribs, game birds, duck breast and truffle-rich dishes, as well as mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open fully and soften its structure.
Producer
Chateau Gruaud Larose is one of the great names of Saint-Julien and a historic 2nd Growth estate, completed in 1725. Over its long history, the château has passed through four families, and today it is owned by Jacques Merlaut and the Taillan Group, which also includes several other respected Bordeaux properties. The estate is widely admired for its longevity, consistency and collectible wines, and it has become an international reference point for serious Bordeaux lovers.
