Description

Château Fiefs de Lagrange Saint-Julien 2022 is the characterful second wine of the historic Château Lagrange, offering a refined Médoc experience at a more approachable level. Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, it captures the depth and structure of Saint-Julien with a supple, early-drinking charm. The remarkable 2022 vintage, one of the warmest ever recorded in Bordeaux, has delivered small, intensely concentrated berries that translate into a wine of notable purity and energy.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Fiefs de Lagrange 2022 shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue with a youthful sheen that hints at its concentration and freshness. The nose opens with blackcurrant and ripe blackberry, followed by notes of black cherry, violet, graphite and a touch of cedar from barrel aging. Subtle hints of cocoa, dried herbs and a light spice echo the classic Saint-Julien profile without ever feeling heavy. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with ripe yet finely structured tannins and a lively backbone of acidity that keeps the rich fruit in perfect balance. Flavors of cassis, dark plum and wild berries intertwine with notes of tobacco leaf, pencil shavings and a gentle toastiness from oak. The finish is long, fresh and savoury, with that characteristic gravelly elegance of the appellation. While crafted to be accessible within a few years of the vintage, this 2022 has the concentration and structure to evolve beautifully over 8–12 years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Fiefs de Lagrange is sourced from the gravelly, well-drained terroirs of Saint-Julien that surround Château Lagrange, where the vines—around 35 years old on average—are deeply rooted in a mix of gravel, sand and clay. The 2022 growing season was marked by exceptional heat, but the estate’s deep gravel soils and cool, refreshing nights allowed the vines to withstand the climatic extremes and produce small, highly concentrated grapes with remarkable ripeness and natural freshness. Harvesting is carefully timed parcel by parcel to capture optimal maturity, and the bunches are destemmed and passed through an optical sorting system to keep only the finest berries. Vinification takes place in a combination of stainless steel, concrete and wooden vats, with each parcel vinified separately to respect its identity before blending. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques for a period adapted to Fiefs’ more approachable style, using a lower proportion of new wood than the Grand Vin to preserve fruit purity and drinkability.

Food & Serving
Fiefs de Lagrange 2022 is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roasted lamb, entrecôte with herb butter, duck breast, or a simple grilled ribeye. It also pairs beautifully with richer poultry dishes, game birds, mushroom-based recipes and aged hard cheeses like Comté or matured cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and refined tannins. For optimal enjoyment in its youth, decant for about 45–60 minutes to allow the fruit and oak-derived notes to fully harmonise; as the wine ages, a shorter decant of 30 minutes will be sufficient primarily to open the bouquet.

Producer
Château Lagrange is one of the historic Classified Growths of Saint-Julien, recognised as a 3ème Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification. Like many Bordeaux estates, it has experienced both highs and lows, and in the difficult decades following the Second World War it came perilously close to disappearing, forced to sell off land that later formed the basis of estates such as Château du Glana, Château Lalande-Borie and, in part, Château Gloria. The turning point came in 1983, when Japan’s Suntory Group acquired the property and invested heavily in its restoration, expanding the vineyard holdings from 48 to over 120 hectares and completely modernising the cellars, including the installation of optical sorting and a large array of fermentation vessels. Today, Château Lagrange is once again regarded as one of the reference points of Saint-Julien, crafting both a highly regarded Grand Vin and an increasingly sought-after second wine, Fiefs de Lagrange, which offers a superb introduction to the estate’s precise, Cabernet-driven style.
