Description
Château d’Yquem is one of the world’s most celebrated sweet wines, revered for its extraordinary concentration, balance, and longevity. Produced in Sauternes from botrytised Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, it stands alone as the only estate in Bordeaux’s 1855 Classification to receive the rank of Premier Cru Supérieur. For more than 400 years, Yquem has represented the pinnacle of noble-rot winemaking and a true benchmark for luxury dessert wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Château d’Yquem 2009 typically shows a deep golden hue with brilliant luminosity, hinting at both richness and freshness. The nose is layered and expressive, offering aromas of candied citrus, ripe apricot, pineapple, honey, saffron, vanilla, and floral notes, with the complexity of noble rot adding depth and nuance.
The palate is opulent yet remarkably precise, combining luscious sweetness with vibrant acidity that keeps the wine lifted and focused. Expect flavors of marmalade, stone fruit, tropical fruit, toasted almonds, and caramel, all carried by a long, elegant finish. This vintage has exceptional aging potential and can develop beautifully for decades, gaining further notes of dried fruit, spice, and truffle over time.
Production
Château d’Yquem is made in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux, where the estate’s elevated site and surrounding microclimate encourage the development of botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, on the grapes. The vineyard is planted primarily with Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, and the fruit is harvested in multiple passes so that only perfectly botrytised berries are selected by hand. Yields are extremely low, contributing to the wine’s intense concentration and rarity.
Vinification is carried out with great precision to preserve the purity of the fruit while building extraordinary texture and complexity. The wine is aged in oak barrels, which adds subtle spice and structure without overpowering the wine’s natural sweetness and acidity.
Food & Serving
Château d’Yquem is a classic partner for foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts, tarte tatin, or simply enjoyed on its own as a contemplative wine. It is also excellent with dishes that balance sweetness and salt, such as roasted poultry with a fruit glaze. Serve well chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and decant only if needed for an older bottle or to gently open a younger vintage.
Producer
Château d’Yquem has been a legendary name in Bordeaux for more than four centuries and remains the undisputed icon of Sauternes. The estate’s reputation was cemented in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, where it was uniquely awarded Premier Cru Supérieur status, the highest distinction in the region. Under generations of ownership and careful stewardship, it has endured challenges such as phylloxera and still remains a global reference point for fine sweet wine.
