Description

Château d’Yquem is one of the world’s most celebrated sweet wines, and the 2005 vintage is a superb expression of what makes this Sauternes legend so revered. Produced from meticulously botrytised Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon grapes, it combines remarkable concentration, elegance, and balance in a wine that has long held the unique distinction of Premier Cru Supérieur status in the 1855 Bordeaux classification.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Château d’Yquem 2005 shows a luminous golden hue that deepens with age. The bouquet is layered and refined, offering aromas of apricot, candied citrus, honey, dried flowers, saffron, and toasted almond, with the signature complexity that comes from noble rot. On the palate, it is richly textured yet beautifully precise, balancing concentrated sweetness with vibrant acidity. Flavours of ripe peach, marmalade, quince, and caramel unfold over a long, silky finish. This vintage has outstanding aging potential and is built to evolve gracefully for decades, developing even more depth, nuance, and patina over time.

Production
The grapes for Château d’Yquem are grown on the highest hill in Sauternes, where the terroir encourages the development of botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, under the right autumn conditions. Harvesting is done selectively and often over several passes through the vineyard, with only perfectly botrytised berries chosen. The result is extremely low yields and exceptional concentration, with the wine traditionally crafted from a blend dominated by Sémillon and complemented by Sauvignon Blanc.

Food & Serving
Serve Château d’Yquem slightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, to best appreciate its aromatic precision and richness. It is an excellent match for foie gras, blue cheese, fruit tarts, crème brûlée, or simply enjoyed on its own as a luxurious after-dinner wine. Decanting is usually not necessary for young bottles, but an older vintage may benefit from a gentle decant to remove sediment and allow the aromas to open.

Producer
Château d’Yquem has been synonymous with greatness for more than 400 years and remains the benchmark for fine Sauternes. The estate’s reputation was cemented by its unique Premier Cru Supérieur classification in 1855, the highest distinction awarded to any Sauternes estate. Despite phylloxera and other historic challenges, the château has preserved its status as one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious producers, admired worldwide for its consistency, rarity, and exceptional longevity.
